I hate chains! I only go when a) I’m in a tiny town with no other options (happens sometimes when I’m on the road for work) or b) very occasionally for a great happy hour deal – and I feel guilty the whole time.

They are familiar. You know exactly what you’re going to,get. There’s comfort in that for a lot of people. Eating at a new local place takes guts for a lot off people.

    I like a choose restaurant. Sometimes that’s a chain. Sometimes that’s a local place.

I love love love Yelp for just this reason. I can check out reviews on places. I do always take them with a grain of salt, but it gives me a good idea of where to try and where to avoid

I prefer local, family owned and run restaurants.  Quality of food is typically better.

*I don’t understand the Mulder sweet potato pie option on the poll….confused.

@Glasgowbound:  totally agree. We love Chipotle or Red Robin because it’s the same everywhere and it’s always good! But we also definitely go to good local places too — we’re not utterly bound to the chain restaurant experience. Just sometimes 🙂

And when I voted for “some” local chains, I meant “one”, lol. An awesome BBQ shack (like really a shack) down the road.

There are some smaller ‘chains’ here that started as a local place that I love.  I like chains becuase I know what I’m getting – sometimes I’m just not in the mood for an adventure!

I only eat at chains for lunch when I am at work. For dinner I pretty much despise most chains. However, in some areas there arent many options besides chain restaurants. I live near NYC so there are 10 restaurants or more on every block! Sooo many options so we are always trying different places. Plus, I prefer ethnic foods and chain places are not good at that.

We try to go to local places — they are generally our favorites. However, sometimes I get a hankering for some Cheesecake Factory or California Pizza Kitchen.

I think the reason chains were brought up so much in the boycotting restaurants thread was because more people would understand what they were talking about, and also at least in my experience I’ve had more bad experiences with chains than with local restaurants. I named most of the chain restaurants I complained about, but didn’t name the one local place I got food poisoning from because no one would know what I was talking about.

@peachacid:  I work in Philly often and there are plenty of chain restaurants. It’s just you probably wouldnt go because there are a million other options like in NY.

I only go to two chains- panera and chipotle, when I’m looking for something fast, because they are both on my way home and I like both of them. Everything else is local. We don’t eat out all that often though
