    I voted no because I have never seen – to my knowledge, as in not pointed out to me – a moissy IRL. Only here on pictures and when I see pictures online it is a little hard to really tell, plus I usually don’t look at pictures that closely. I was able to tell the difference between a diamond and a white sapphire, but to me the difference in those would be a lot more obvious between a diamond and a moissanite.

    @Regina Phalange:  Here is one:

    Here is the other:

    In pictures, I cannot tell the difference.  I don’t know about real life, since I would NEVER ask anyone with a diamond-looking ring whether it was a diamond or not…and no one has offered the information.

    @peachacid:  Random guess, the moissy is the top, the diamond is the bottom?

    Yes, but only because I’ve seen both up close.  Though, I’d only be able to tell if it was next to a diamond and/or I was able to examine the moissanite up close.  Even if someone knows what moissanite is and what it looks like, I don’t think at quick glance the average person is going to know it’s not a diamond.  That’s just my opinion.

    I believe so, although I haven’t seen one in person in a long time. I remember when I was in high school seeing a display of them in a jewelry store and I definitely did not mistake them for diamonds. Although I understand in the last 10 years they probably have improved, and I don’t believe I’ve seen one in person since that time. But, I feel like in photos I can often tell depending on the quality of the photo. I usually think it is a little easier in real vs. stock photos. Although above I’d be pretty sure the top is Moissanite.

    Interesting question. I haven’t had the opportunity to see moissanite in real life (not that I know of anyhow!)

    I saw a brief documentary on television a couple of years ago where they took moissanite to diamond appraisers, and only 6 out of 10 of the appraisers noticed that it wasn’t a diamond. So I’m guessing that if professionals have a hard time telling the difference, that most people would never be able to tell.

    It depends. I’m really only familiar with the round cuts of Moissanite. I don’t think I could tell it apart from a diamond IRL unless they were side-by-side and I knew one of them was Moissanite. In pictures I find it easier since the glitteryness isn’t such a distraction haha

    When I went to try on wedding bands at least 3 jewelers complimented me on my diamond after taking a close look at my ring (which is Moissanite). I think most people assume a white/clear stone is a diamond, I know I do, despite the fact that I have a Moissy.

    But then again I think all jewelry is beautiful and meaningful , so I’ve never questioned any thing I’ve seen or really cared!

    Only certain angle of Moissanite pictures.  I think the cut is different from diamond so at some lighting of picture, I can see that the cut is not as sharp as diamond.

    Can’t tell a difference, and don’t really care if there is one. To each their own.

    Absolutely no way! And I don’t think most people, even jewelers, would be able to tell with the casual naked eye. It’s properties are just too similar – scientifically. There’s enough variation in diamond that even if you were in lighting where the moissanite took on some color, that could just as easily be a J – K diamond.

    I can tell the difference, the newer ones I might just think they were a warmer colored diamond (a little yellowish) in certain lighting conditions, but they turn more of a greyish green in overcast conditions. The older ones had a more greenish tone all of the time. You can also tell a round moissy by its cut, it’s different than a round brillant diamond since it is cut to maximize the beauty of the Moissy. If you hit the right light (like at a nice resturaunt or jewelery store) they will really sparkle with alot of fire, more fire than a natural diamond could create.

    I think it would be alot easier to spot a moissy than it would a well cut CZ, that would difficult. Honestly I think a CZ if your looking to replicate a diamond is about as close as you can get. Unfortunately CZ are pretty soft so you might have to replace it often, depending on how hard you are on it.

    @Regina Phalange:  Well Fiance and I went into zales to find a enhancer for my engagement ring, and the manager who I guess has worked with moissanite for many years tried to tell me that my pink moissy was not a moissy lol but then he tested it an was so amazed that he was calling all of his employees over to look at it because none of them have seen a moissanite let alone a pink one. That was when he started to explain how to tell them apart by eye if there wasn’t a tester around somewhere lol. He said the difference between diamonds and moissys is moissys sparkle purple and pink when diamonds don’t. Now don’t please don’t quote me lol because it was about two months ago BUT… either way lol there are two colors that moissanite sparkles that diamonds dont.
