No, I do not believe in any gods.

I grew up in a Christian household, and I was quite the zealous believer in my adolescence. Nonetheless, I have always been a very logical person, and even at a young age I had questions I could not justify with my faith. When I was 15 an event happened that put the first real crack in my faith, and when I was 18 or 19 I became an atheist.

I’m far happier and more free as an atheist than I ever was as a Christian.

@Ninteenthchance:  I have a hunch that “Do you believe in God?” as a title would attract more atheists than religious individuals. It would be super interesting to see if this poll would get different results than a “What religion are you?” poll.

Anyway, enough of my sidebar, I am atheist.

@Ninteenthchance:  I’m an athiest now, but I grew up in a secular household that always agnostic, but sometimes celebrated certain holidays that have their roots in a religious sect.

When I recieved my first Kindle as a gift from my dad, he had preloaded it with some books. Amongst them was “God is Not Great”. That was the first time that I considered how my parens’ beliefs had influenced my own. To that effect, I do understand how religon can be passed down through the centuries with little critical thought or agency, so I’m generally respectful of others’ beliefs.

Well, since no other believers have chimed in, I’m a progressive Christian. I am fully capable of believing in science (and evolution) and in God. I’m very left-brained and logical. I’ve extensively studied religions in general, and my own in particular. I have been called a “bad Christian” and “not even a Christian” for my progressive beliefs, but I’m cool with it, and not particularly concerned about labels.

@Ninteenthchance:  I do believe in a higher power. So, yes, I believe in God. Though, I don’t judge those who don’t share my views or experiences. I’m open minded, and can respect anyone’s beliefs, in the same way that I would want someone to respect mine.

In response to the PP’s side note: If a post like this attracts more atheists versus believers, then as a Christian, I find it disappointing that the other believers are hesitant to say a simple “Yes”.

I do. And contrary to popular belief, the more knowledge I gain in the sciences, the more I believe there is a God. For me the minute details are too precise to merely happen by accident. I do belive in evolution, I just believe God had a hand in directing that evolution. One of my favorite quotes “Science is the study of secondary causes.” Meaning, yea we can study the way things work, but ultimately it is God that made it that way, we’re just learning about some of his processes. But that’s just me, I realize I’m in the minority, and I’m a-ok with that. 🙂 Anyways I just want to remind some of the naysayers (not saying there are any in this thread, nothing was actually mentioned) that you CAN be a scientist and be a beliver.

@Ninteenthchance:  I know more than one person who has said he is a Christian because he is an American. It blows my mind that American = Christian to some folks, as if they cannot be separated.
