Many venues require them (I know mine did).

Plus I find it to be helpful for keeping both sides of the aisle relatively balanced.

Even though my chapel is very small I am still having an usher so that the sides are mixed up ( no brides side or grooms side) and so that they are even as well…

I don’t think they’re necessary, but for a formal event or if you’ve got a lot of old-fashioned/stuffy guests, you may want to consider them. We had our groomsman hang out by the entrance, welcome people and encourage them to enter/sit wherever.

We aren’t having them. We are having an outdoor wedding and mixed seating (no brides or grooms side since my family is 10 times larger than his) We are having “VIP” seating where the front chairs will be labeled.

I wanted them.  DH didn’t.  There were several rows of seating on DH’s side, behind his family that were left open – and tons of people crammed in the back.  This would have been avoided had we had ushers…

so, I’m DEFINITELY in the PRO usher camp.

ETA: it was small chapel, 13 rows, 2 sides, 125 guests.

We didn’t have them, actually I never even thought about it.  Everyone seemed to get seated just fine.  It probably helped that we had exactly enough chairs, so it’s not like there was a chance of one side being more full than the other.

We had them but not for seating purposes… I needed someone that could open and close the doors for the Bridal Party and My entrance.. and then again for our exit. That’s why we had them. =)

@red_rose: Yea it wasn’t till I made a trip out to our venue to start thinking through ceremony song timing that I realized.. “Oh.. who’s gonna open the doors?!”

I dont think you NEED them. The last wedding I went to the groomsman acted as the ushers before the ceremony started, it went fine!!
