sunburn :  You made a blanket statement that implied that only those who were not left leaning were racist. Her answer called you out.

I am curious why you felt it necessary to call out her grammar and spelling.

bywater :  politically speaking racism has been a central part of right wing American politics since the beginning, and anti racism and civil rights has typically been a “leftist” movement. It’s also important to note that political movements that stress racial purity or are exclusive of minorities are primarily right wing movements.

Yeah, people of all political spectrums are racists. But racism historically has been used politically by right wing movements, and that remains true today. Acceptance is generally a central focus for leftist politics, so it’s less common when overt racists are left leaning. That’s not to say that all right leaning people are racists, and left leaning people can’t be racist.

But generally overtly racist relatives tend not to be a big problem when your family leans left.

And while we’re at it, I’m just gonna put this fact out there: there is no such thing as racism against white people.

happiekrappie :  I definitely agree and I’m not surprised that people who have never been targeted by or never felt the effects tolerate racism from relatives. To be around it when you’re not impacted or aren’t close to anyone it impacts, it’s just embarrassing behavior as opposed to hurtful or dangerous.

I personally prefer to try to teach people why their actions and views are harmful and wrong, as opposed to just cutting them out directly. That being said, if I call them out a few times and they just argue back, lol bye bitch. I don’t want to associate with someone that won’t learn.

happiekrappie :  YUP. It’s like men saying “not all men!” Like, why do you feel the need to point that out…if you’re not sexist/racist/a bigot, that comment isn’t directed towards you so why feel the need to defend yourself? 🤔

bywater :  I speak very deliberately. That you would infer that I meant there are no racists on the left is just stretching what I said to the breaking point while simultaneously ignoring the fact that the right wing has supported racism for decades.

Overall rabbits like carrots. I have a rabbit. You can infer that he probably likes carrots. Does that mean all rabbits like carrots? No it does not. There very well may be a non carrot eating rabbit in the briar patch.

Overall the left supports an anti racist agenda. My family leans very left. You can infer they probably support an anti racist agenda. That does not mean that every single person on the left is not racist.

misty2007 :  You should probably learn the difference between racism and prejudice if you’re going to start preaching this shit.

chelbell23 :  So the very divisive and very destructive anti-Irish sentiments that exist(ed) is not a thing? A whole history deemed “not a thing” because it’s not pervasive in the CURRENT climate?

Racism is racism. Acknowledging this fact does not lessen the struggle of the current social climate. The thought that one race is exempt compounds the issue.

misty2007 :  That’s prejudice. Not racism. “Irish” is not a race.

    Edit: Your point is incorrect.
