My mom picked my name, Emily, because she thought it was classic and rare. It was #33 the year I was born. I knew a few Emilys, but it was nothing like Jennifer or Sara(h). Now, it’s been in the top 10 for the past 21 years, with it at #1 for 12 years in a row. So now there are millions of Emilys everywhere I go, and I am just the old one. Grrrr. I sometimes add my middle name to my first just to tell us all apart. Luckily my names go well together.

My name is Desirée. I don’t need to look up to know that it wasn’t popular at all. Not sure what number it falls on list though.

Mine was #2 the year I was born (1981), beaten by Jennifer in the #1 spot until 1985, when I was finally victorious, and hit the #1 spot! Weirdly though, growing up I only know 1 other girl with my name and she was a year younger than me.
However, in university I dated a boy with 2 younger brothers and at one point all three of them were dating girls with the same name – mine! 😉

My name was in the top 5 from 1948-1967 (minus one year)…but the year I was born it was 52. I guess that’s why I always felt that people around my mother’s age always had my name!

In 1989 my name was ranked #696! I like having a name that’s not too popular, I’ve only known of two others in real life, and Trista off of The Bachelorette haha! Last year it was number #1986 in popularity!

Shopping the sweet spot – I like it! Sounds like a good idea.
My name was 214th in 1987. It’s the French version of a name for which the common American spelling spelling was 24th that year. Both have dropped in popularity since then.
As far as personalized items go, it was a little depressing when my grandma would get me things with the more popular spelling. I was like, that’s not my name. But for the most part I love being a little abnormal. I’ve decided that I’m going to use “not popular” names for my future kids. You can get pencil cases and necklaces personalized. You can not help a kid out when there are three Sarahs in their class. I’ve never met someone with a common name who the teachers have to call Matt K. or Matt S. to differentiate who said “well at least I can buy tiny snowglobes with my name on them!” Just my two cents.
On the flip side, I suppose it would be nice to have the assumed spelling of my name be the correct one and not have to correct the spelling of my name any time the spelling matters.

My name is Sara, and I was born in 1984. Pretty darn popular…
However, for every 1 other “Sara” I met, I knew 10 “Sarahs.” There were probably 5 or 6 “Sarahs” in my grade at any given moment thoughtout my life. This mostly gets annoying because everyone just assumes I spell my name with an H, so I always have to correct people. Probably every other certificate or trophy or what-have-you that I got in school has my name spelled with an H on it. lol
As a side note, I don’t really mind how popular or not popular a name is… if I like it, I like it. I don’t really have anything to prove to anyone about my “originality.” What bothers me, though, is when dumb names are popular. haha

Mine was 46. I’ve only met a few other Allison’s in my entire life. And I only ever went to school with two others. I like more unique names myself (though I love my name on me.) And nowadays you can get everything personalized anyways, so I wouldnt worry about whether or not your kid can get personalized pencils.

Mine was #60 in 1981. Strange though because in my law school class of about 120 there are 4 of us.

I don’t have exact numbers, but in my area, it was stupid popular. I grew up being called FirstLast, all together, because there were so many other people with my name and even my last initial. My last name is very common too, so it’s led to a lot of interesting situations at doctors offices, pharmacies (yes, I got the wrong drug once), and schools.
Honestly, I’d steer clear of any of the top 10, especially if you have a more common last name. It’s just annoying being one of three or four in a room at any given time.

My name (Brittany) was number 7 in ’92 and my SO (Joshua) was number 4 in ’91… Our parents obviously weren’t feeling very creative! Haha (:
