@fishbone: I have a feeling it might be the Holy Name. There are three churches near to the Northern Quarter (I LOVE the Northern Quarter! I practically grew up in the piercing and tattoo studios, and the rock and metal clubs there). St Mary’s and St Patricks are right nearby, and Holy Name is a mile and some change away, opposite the university.
There were a whole bunch of issues with Holy Name. Basically, they were run by this group who acted like Vatican 2 had never happened. Even FI, who is uber-Catholic, went there and said “never again”. They were also home to the university Catholic club who were, in my day, quite frankly, a bunch of mentals. Word to the wise: if you want NORMAL friends who are also religious, don’t look for them in religious clubs. I learned that the hard way. Join the yoga society, or something… you’ll probably have more luck.
Anyway, I digress… the Holy Name became so locally notorious for it’s pre-Vatican 2 practises that the local bishop intervened in 2012 and returned control of the church to the Jesuits, who have attempted to usher in a new era of rather more progressive Christianity. There has been a lot of resistance so far…
How’s that for a snippet of local history!
