Our first and forever home was 550k 5 years ago.  Simiilar house down the street just sold last month for 620k so it’s probably worth a little more now.  I was 31 when we bought it.

$360k or so. We live in an expensive city and bought in the burbs. Inner city this wouldn’t buy much lol.

We bought in a suburb and paid $260,000. For 1,500+ sq feet in SoCal, I’d say we got a really good deal.

Cost of living is pretty low in Texas. So our 1900sqft 3bed/2ba/ 2 car garage was only $140k. We live in a city of about 300k people.

thosethreewords:  you forgot to take certain areas in the US into account too. Here in SC it’s completely acceptable to live in a mobile home. My first husband and I paid 15k for a singlewide in 99, no land, he still lives there.

My Fiance and I just paid 170k for a 3000 sq ft, 100 year old farm house, on one acre, in the same town

This poll is so skewed because of cost of living.  I’m in Seattle ‘burbs where the average median home price is $350-400k.  We bought our first home in our 20’s as a forclosure.  It has been gutted to dirt and rebuilt but we STILL paid $140k.  Where we were born and raised (Michigan) that would buy a beautiful home! I think its hard to compare dollar amounts with such a broad audience.

Our first home was $420. It’s now worth about $550 (thank goodness!). I’m in So Cal.

thosethreewords:  we bought our first home for $165k (almost 4 years ago) but is worth $240k by last appraisal value and based on current market, only going up.

thosethreewords:  I live in Texas and our home cost 140k. Four bedrooms,  2 1/2 bath, 2 car garage and our lot is a little over 10,0000 sqft. Our home is about 2,000 sqft. I work pretty close to home. I didn’t need to move out to the suburbs to get a good deal. Our neighborhood is up and coming so our home is valued at almost 200k now.

I bought a 3 bedroom 2.5 bathroom condo, a little under 1300 sqft for $170k in 2012. It was a foreclosure and I put about $25k into it for renovations before I moved in. It was just appraised for $302k. In southern California.

We are at a loss about where to buy our next house because everywhere is so expensive now (for safe area AND a good school district and at least a 4000 sqft lot it’s at least $500k). I’d like to move out of state but we’ll see if that happens.

150k and it is a townhome (still live in it). We put a lot of money into it to fix it up. We weren’t ready for a bigger “family home” yet and we didn’t feel comfortable spending that money. Our house is pretty small but does the job now in a good neighborhood. The homes that we we’re looking at originally were like 250k for crap. Crappy homes and a for a crappy neighborhood.

House prices vary so much from towns though, it’s crazy.

We are in the Southeast. Just purchased in April and we paid $135k. It’s a townhome about 10 years old, 1700 sq ft, 3 bed, 2.5 bath, 1 car garage, and 2 car driveway. It was pretty much move-in ready.
