With a 90lb lab, we are always on the hunt for awesome, worthwhile, indestructible toys.
Our dog has shredded through 4″ rubber rings, X-Treme Kongs (that boast being indestructible!), and toys of a magnitude that I never thought possible for him to chew through.
So over the years, we’ve narrowed down a handful of awesome dog toys that are our go-to’s.
Zogoflex toys (which I found by accident in a pet store in Asheville) are AH-MAZE-ING. Seriously. Cooper has 3 and LOVES THEM, and they don’t have a scratch or nick on them…they just can’t be chewed apart!! They’ve lasted three years as of now, and have no idication of being ruined.
He LOVES the massive nylabones, which he wears down but it takes him a while. These extra large ones are his fave (he’s got the super size) and last him about a year since he’s not constantly chewing on them. We’ve only had to replace one so far, and they are worth the money.
And the ONLY plush toys that last him more than 5 minutes are these Tuffie toys that have these crazy reinforced edges that are harder for dogs to chew through. He still manages to un-stuff them, but it takes him a few weeks/months of work to totally destroy them, and it’s a nice change (I think) from all of the hard bones he’s got!
So, what toys do you love to give your dogs? i’m talking about large-breed dogs, but all dog-parents are welcome to share!! I honestly get a kick out of the tiny toys people can buy for their small breeds–I can’t Imagine! It’s always neat to see other toy ideas, since if you’re the owner of “ferocious chewer” large breed, you know what it’s like to excitedly shop for $30 worth of toys taht you think are AWESOME and large-breed-proof, only to have them all shredded and destroyed in under 10 minutes!

The above I LOVE! My dog has never tried to chew through an extreme kong, but he has certainly done his fair share of damage on other toys. He can chew a hard nylabone to the core in less than a day.
I find that some of the kong toys are just garbage and easily destroyed. Also, any of those “hide the treat” toys are destroyed by our shephard cross in less than a day. The lab roots through to get the treat and the shephard EATS through to get them. *facepalm*

My dog (a sheltie) loves kong toys and those giant no stuffing squeaker toys with 16 squeakers in them at petsmart. They’re super annoying, but if they keep him entertained I’ll deal with listening to a bunch of squeaking.

We let him tear ’em up but we try to buy him new toys pretty regularly. He likes to gut the stuffed animals and then drag the empty carcass around the living room. My personal favorite was a hedgehog from Walmart that grunted; we called it his Grun-Grun. When FI threw it away Brutus found it in the trash, took it out and started playing with it. Hopefully Walmart will have more of those when Christmas gets closer.

@discodance: you are SO BRAVE to get the million-squeaker toys!! We found a cheap sale toy at petsmart that was a parrot, but i had an empty plastic water bottle in it. Cooper LOVES water bottles but they are the worst thing EVER to listen to. So we bought the toy and waited to give him that toy when he was staying with my brother while we were on our honeymoon as a joke! My brother was a good sport and let cooper chew it to his hearts content though!

Only 1 of my dogs likes toys very much, and she doesn’t like hard toys like Kongs (unless there’s food inside).
The stuffed toy she destroys the slowest are these dragon toys. She’ll still rip the squeaker out within a matter of minutes, and chew off the spikes and ears, and de-stuff what little stuffing they put in to them, but the toy stays mostly intact. (We have 4 of these now! All the colors below, plus a Christmas dragon with a santa hat.)

@abbyful: Those are super cute!!
My reply would be long long long. My dog loves any and ALL toys, more than food- SERIOUSLY!

@MrsDrRose612: We bought one of the smaller ones for him first because he LOOOOVES squeaky toys. I think he part of the reason he likes them so much is because my SO gets so annoyed by them. Ha ha. That is too funny about the water bottle toy – Ned will chew on those, too, and you’re right – that sound is terrible!

Our foster dog, Vanna White, loves stuffless toys. We’ve got a bunny that she carries around the house all day. She also loves this green and white soft, felt rope we bought at Target for $1. She doesn’t like anything hard or chewy, so no kongs or balls for us right now.

@Jilliebean1: are those the toys that come unstuffed?

My dog’s favourite toy is a small soccer ball.
We spent at least $60 in Kong-related toys and $110 in other, misc. toys and all he wants to do is play with my brother’s old soccer ball. :/
That is why you don’t buy too many toys before you get the pup!

@JEHS: our dog love soccer balls too but he always pops the bladders inside so they deflate. We got him this kick-fetch ball which is awesome because it can be kicked like a soccer ball, but also has grooves so the dog can carry it with his teeth! We’ve lost so many $5 used soccer balls. They add up after a while!

@MrsDrRose612: Ah that’s great! I’ll look into one of those. He’s not a big chewer (unless there’s paper products around) so he hasn’t popped a ball yet, but I’m sure he can and maybe will when he gets older.

I made one by knotting some old socks and outgrown undershirts together to make a rope. He loves it and plays with it more than any of his other storebought toys. He just likes chewing it, carrying it around or giving it to me to tug on. I love it because it didn’t cost me anything and doesn’t make a lot of noise for the folks that live below us.
