I’m from the Midwest and I’ve been living in Coastal NC for about a year and a half now. Here are some things I’ve come to associate with the South:

-Fried chicken and biscuits are available for every meal.

-Sweet Tea

-CHEERWINE. Love this stuff and we don’t have it up north.

-COOKOUT. Not sure if these are all over the South or just in the Carolinas but oh my goodness you can get like a double cheeseburger, a chicken quesadilla, a chicken wrap, and a milkshake for FIVE DOLLARS and it’s like the best fast food place on this whole planet.

-Guns. So many guns.

-Jesus. So much Jesus.

-People who actually wear cowgirl/cowboy boots in their real everyday lives.

– People who are under the assumption that “The South will rise again,” and wear/display/fly/get tattoos of Confederate flags as if no one told them that that they lost the Civil War a very long time ago.

-Some really appalling civil rights violations.

-General and widely-accepted sexism, socially and institutionally. Possibly attributed to the “Southern Belle” persona that women are expected to live up to.

-EVERYONE has babies ASAP (although this could be a military thing rather than a Southern thing. I’m 22 with no babies and I might as well have 3 heads).

ETA: Apple. Pie. Moonshine. Glug glug glug.

Cheerwine, manners, and sentimentality.  But also pressures of conformity and rampant materialism.

I also think of very slow walkers, the Tennessee Vols, and turnips for some reason. Billy Currington?

@Bridey77:  Sugar in grits does sound pretty disgusting. Have you tried it with lots of butter and bacon? Cheese is good too.

@Miss Fish:  We are supposed to be getting our first Cookout in metro Atlanta, just up the street from us. We’ll have to check it out.

My husband’s family is from NC, and he (and his brother too) love Cheerwine.

Ew to sugar in grits! The closest thing I have done to that is maybe put some jelly in it a time or two!

Swamp people!  Lol. Only partially.  And I know Im totally wrong, but I always find it funny when American born, english speaking americans need subtitles.

I do think there is an enlarged view of a religion/guns love, but I think the media has really escalated that lately.
