So this is based off the thread about the family getting locked in for refusing to tip 17percent on what they considered subpar service..
What do you consider good service?
I eat at a variety of places, from high-end restaurants and steakhouses, to chains, to bars/pubs, to small mom and pop and ethnic restaurants. First thing is I always adjust my expectations depending on where I eat.
At all places I expect:
To get my food served fresh and in a timely manner
To be checked on once or twice during my dinner
if the place is busy and it’s a weekend, a look or acknowledgement of some kind from the waiter to let me know that I haven’t been forgotten.
I don’t need servers to be nice but just respectful and I do the same in return.
I don’t expect waiters not to make mistakes, but I prefer they just fix the situation rather then get a attitude or argue with me about it. For an example I have a friend who has a food allergy and there are very few places she goes out to eat because of peoples cavalier attitudes about her restrictions, they send her food with nuts or something she can’t eat after she ask them to keep it out, then they get upset about it. It’s like hello you guys could kill her, what is so complicated about that which you do not understand??
Another major pet peeve of mine for Steak houses and fancy restaurants, when the waiter hoovers too much and automatically fills up the wine/water glasses every few minutes. It impedes the conversation at the table, and it’s annoying when we order an expensive bottle of wine, and then he or she is pouring it for someone who doesn’t want any without asking first.
There was one instance where I didn’t tip that I can remember and that was because I only got appetizers and water. I had been there for two hours, I had repeatedly asked the waiter for a drink which he never brought. I went up to the hostess and asked for my check and I cancelled my dinner order and paid my tab didn’t tip and left. Typically if I don’t like the service I will tip 12-15 percent. Everything else is 18-25 percent.
I also know a few people who are super critical at restaurants and rude and seem to not be statified no matter where we go and I refuse to eat dinner with them.
