We always have a thread or two floating around complaining about the nonsense people post on Facebook … but what sorts of things do you actually enjoy seeing on your news feed? I freely admit that I can hardly keep up with hiding all the people who post crap after crap, and there are only a handful of people whose feeds actually amuse me. The things that they post that make me happy include things like:
– Funny status updates that they wrote themselves. Sharing jokes other people wrote is great and all, but I especially enjoy it when the humorous update is original
– actual newsworthy life events — you know, stuff like “got the job!” or “we just signed the paperwork to buy our first house!”
– links to hilarious ‘articles’ like “20 pictures of wet cats” or “20 pictures of cats mid-sneeze.” So pretty much links to pictures of cats. I rely on my facebook friends to keep me from accidentally doing any work during the day.
– Pictures of you or your kids that are cute/funny/interesting in some way. I know that “interesting” is really subjective but come on, we can all agree that a selfie in the bathroom or a picture of your kid watching TV in a diaper is NOT interesting. But I love looking at pictures, so if they’re worth looking at, then post away!
How about you? What sorts of updates make Facebook worth checking?

I like Buzzfeed shares. Buzzfeed is kind of the best place on the internet (besides the Bee of course!) so I never mind checking out something hilarious on there.
I also like seeing people’s kid photos, especially if I don’t live near them. It’s cool to see them grow up. If it’s someone I don’t care for, or if their kid is …well… let’s just say I’ve seen kids who were beaten with an ugly stick, but I sincerely hope they are just ducklings waiting to blossom into swans, anyway I just scroll past some of those pics.
I also enjoy seeing big announcements. If I don’t give a shit about your life (but have to keep you as a ‘friend’ to avoid family drama) then I probably won’t see your announcement since your feed is hidden. If, on the other hand, I enjoy keeping up with your big life events, facebook is a good way to catch up.**
**Unless you’re an immediate family member. I better get a phone call or a text about your big life event.

@DaneLady: oh my god, a girl I went to high school with has the funniest-looking kid I have ever seen. I have NEVER seen a picture of him that didn’t make me laugh. I can’t even describe what it is about him that is so funny, but I get so excited every time I see her name in my news feed!! I would be heartbroken if she stopped posting regular pictures of her kid. Heartbroken.
ETA — he’s funny-looking in a cute way, like a bulldog or a pug. So I’m not just laughing at him. I honestly enjoy looking at his face and trying to make sense of it.

@iarebridezilla: Haha I just contributed to the “things I hate on fb” post 😛
I do like the funny posts, buzzfeed links, funny animal links, and vacation photos, but only of the actual place that someone is visiting. No hot dog legs on the beach lol

@iarebridezilla: Oh, no I mean the kids who are actually really unfortunate looking. I really, really do hope they grow into… something else.
Ya know, I worry sometimes, and I think you’ll understand. See, you and I both have SUPER ADORABLE BABIES. Like, TOO cute. I worry that maybe they peaked too soon? What if they have a reduction in adorable-ness? I know this is not really on the list of things people should be worrying about, and I’m not losing sleep over it, but I just kind of wonder.

@iarebridezilla: I might be the only one but I LIKE pictures of food… I know that is one of the biggest FB gripes out there but I like food and like seeing it in different presentations or hearing restaurant recommndations
@DaneLady: LOVE Buzzfeed & Huffington Post! never check it out on my own but I love seeing it when others post it
I also like when people post funny things that happened to them that day in their own words. Funny is subjective but I usually enjoy those posts.

@HourThyme: Ooooh, yeah. I <3 HuffPo. If it weren’t for facebook I wouldn’t even KNOW about it!

@DaneLady: oh trust me, I know. Another of my friend has such a … errrhhhh … unique looking child that I had to hide her from my feed because I just couldn’t.
And another friend who had a super duper cute baby now has a super weird-looking 6 year old. I like to stare at his pictures too and just kind of wonder how that happened.
And yes, I am 100% positive the exact same thing will happen to me/my child. Because karma.
Then again, she doesn’t always photograph well, so maybe that’s just the problem with other people’s kids??:

I like when people share funny articles.
I love seeing Grumpy Cat.
Some people hate memes… but I find many of them hilarious.
Basically anything lighthearted or funny.

A girl I went to HS with did a masters in Women’s Studies and she always posts really interesting articles, generally from a “feminist perspective”, which I find quite interesting. Another friend is doing a Ph.D in the US, and often posts US articles, with commentary from a Canadian perspective, which is also interesting to read.
I also enjoy seeing posts by friends who are living in other parts of the world with pictures of what they are up to.

@HourThyme: I like food pictures if they are WELL-EXECUTED. The problem is, that almost never happens. My brother is an excellent cook and writes a food blog, and he’s gotten super good at taking pictures of food that actually look like something you want to eat. And I totally like pictures like that. I just get mad when I hop on Facebook and see something like this:
ditto on the interesting stories, though. I have one friend that is the queen of that kind of thing, and I always get excited to see her name pop up on the news feed as well!

Humans of New York is one of the best parts of my day, everyday.

Right now? I’m a UNC alum, so anything related to tomorrow’s UNC/Duke basketball game. My newsfeed is pretty much solid videos of past games, pics of UNC players, and inappropriate photoshops of coach K. It’s just fun to see everyone excited, even though we will probably lose.
In general, I like to see people post about major happy events. New houses, pets, kids, travels, etc. Especially houses because I’ve been getting some good renovation ideas lately.

@iarebridezilla: I have a few crying & a few ‘drunk’ photos of BabyDane. They are certainly less flattering, but you can tell she is still a cute kid.

Also — if someone owns a fancy DSLR camera and knows how to use it, they can post as many pictures as they want. I have one facebook friend — who actually photographed my wedding — who is an amazing amateur photographer. And his daughter is drop-dead gorgeous. So he can post 237849275893 super amazing photos of his daughter every day and I won’t get mad because I love looking at them!!
