I live in NW Washington DC. 200k in my neighborhood will buy you a teeny studio. If you leave DC proper and go to VA or MD, you will be able to buy a decent size 1 bedroom. But most condo fees are very high (500+ monthly).

A studio or 1 bedroom in need of major cosmetic upgrading. Fiance and I are always fantasizing about selling our townhouse and buying some huge house in Texas with cash.

After converting that to GBP its about £122,000, so…a one bedroom apartment if you’re lucky!

A 1 bedroom tiny apartment. If that. Most apartments start at 290,000 and houses start at 500,000.

Oh my gosh!

Awesome idea for a thread!  But it makes me sick. Some of these homes are my dream home… for $200,000? Crazy! I want to move!

For $200,000 here you live in the “hood”, aka ghetto.. drugs, crime, gangs. It is voted one of the worst neighbourhoods in Canada every year!

Here is an example:

Its 722 sq ft, and listed at $195,000.

Sadly here in orange county 200k doesn’t buy you anything.  The cheapest 1bedroom studio I have seen on trulia was 264,000. We are looking at buying a tow home (1100sqft) which will be 2 bedroom 2 bath and a small patio for 400k.  If we moved an hour and a half inland 400k would buy us a 3 bedroom home (1700 -2000sqft) but because of where we both work and our hours the commute wouldn’t be feasible

We would get nothing for $200,000…perhaps a really small piece of land.

I live in central Virginia, and around here 200K will get you a nice size house (1800-2000 sq ft) in an older, more established neighborhood. Possibly with an updated kitchen but it really depends. My best friend just bought a house in March and they paid $199,000 for a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath 1850 sq ft. house, built in 1980. The kitchen is partially updated, with granite countertops. Here’s the house:

For 200k you would be able to buy a few parking spaces! I did a zillow search and the lowest priced residence in my zip code is 250k for a 400sq ft studio that was built in 1972 and to put it kindly, needs some updating.
