my kingdom for a shorter commute.  I would take that over a bigger house any day

(we’re currently house hunting.  Why not do everything at once??)

I rather have a short commute with a small apartment than a long commute with large living space. Not to mention, I’m not planning on buying a house any time in the next decade.

I’d rather commute and be in a house that I love vs. have a short commute and a house that I don’t really like.

House is TOP priority for me. I have always lived somewhere far from where I work/go to school though… A regular commute for me is 1hr each way. I draw the line at 1 1/2 hours each way.

What’s the point of a beautiful house if you don’t get to spend any time in it!

    Smaller house/shorter commute for sure.

More time commuting = less time enjoying my bigger home so it really doesn’t seem all that logical to take the bigger house/longer commute option.

I commute 90 min+ each day and it suuuuuucks. I would happily downsize to cut it down (and we’re planning to).

I’d rather live where I want to spend my time.

Jobs are, unfortunately, not permanent.  I’d hate to buy a house based primarily on distance to work.  IMO commute should be considered but wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me.

It would depend on just how long the commute was.  I don’t want to give up my life to driving to and from work but I wouldn’t want to be cramped into a tiny place either.  I couldn’t vote because it would really depend on the specifics for me.

That’s a tough one.  Our house isn’t huge by any stretch of the imagination, it’s only 1,400 square feet.  But we have a large yard we love.  My commute when I bought the place was less than ten minutes; now it’s around 45 minutes because I got a better job.  I wouldn’t want to live anywhere smaller than where we live now but it would be nice to be closer to work.  I just really want to work from home, lol.

I think it would have to depend on the length of the commute.  I wouldn’t do anything more than 30 minutes each way.  I used to for only 6 weeks and I was miserable.

Location is my top priority. You can change the house, but you can’t change the location!

We bought a house 45 minutes from DH’s work just so we could get more house for our money.  So for us, bigger house, longer commute.  He carpools with a friend, so it’s not so bad he says.

@peanuthead:  good point. I’d go with house.
