Human over an animal any day. I just couldn’t live with myself if I knew a human died when I had the chance to save them.

@PuntaCanaBride:  I guess it’s just because I value family over a stranger. My dogs have been there for me every single day, no matter what my mood is or how I act towards them. They are loyal and loving and protective of me every single day. I guess that’s my definition of love and it’s a beautiful thing. I simply don’t feel that way about strangers or most humans for that matter .Or even other peoples dogs. Not that I wouldn’t help a stranger in need, but the question was about choosing.

Maybe a good question to ask is which loss of life would you rather have weighing on your conscience? I would be horrified and sick to know I didn’t save a human life when I had the chance. I would be saddened about not saving my animal, but it would not compare in the least to how I would feel about not saving a human life.

i think the people here who are saying they’d save the human don’t really understand that they could drown too. that human weighs a lot and if you’re not trained in rescue, it’s really easy to get pulled under as well. even if my dog wasn’t drowning, i’m not going to jump in to save a human. a child, probably since they don’t weigh much and i’m confident they couldn’t pull me under. i’m not stupid. i know if i tried to save an adult, i would die too.

@Cory_loves_this_girl:  yes, it’s frustrating but I’d still do it in a heartbeat even if the person was wearing a t-shirt that said “I’d save my dog first if our roles were reversed.”

I might storm off immediately afterward, but I’d still do it. Because fellow human being. (If I knew in advance the person was truly terrible, like a rapist or something, that’s different, but humans with small human foibles, even ones that really annoy me… still very much fellow humans in my eyes.)

@joya_aspera:  I would still save the human too, even if I knew that if the roles were reversed that they wouldn’t save me.

@joya_aspera:  That’s a good response and I’ll agree, my wanting to save my dog is a selfish reason. I will go above and beyond to save MY family. Now if the question is something like who would you save, mom or dogs, I’d have to say without a doubt, definitely mom. It is about familiarity. I know my mom is a wonderful person, as is my Fiance, and even my best friend. I don’t believe in gambling on strangers so that drastically colors my decision.

My DH would absolutely save our dog – she’s his baby.  I love our dog tons, but I couldn’t let another human die.

ETA – it would be a SUPER hard choice and I don’t find those who would choose their dog over the stranger disgusting.

Dog. I would save my dog. If I attempted to save a human I’d probably die in the process. My dog is a frenchie so, I can handle her.

@SoupyCat:  I think it’s the fact that their immediate decision is the direct cause of the human death.
