As far as shaving goes, it’s painful, waists lots of razors and stays hurting every night for like 15 minutes. And I shave every night.
I’ve been considering having it waxed but let me just be honest, I’m afraid of the pain level.
So *be honest* how bad does it hurt? Like scale 1-10? Any other pains to compare it to? Does it hurt like a tattoo? What is more painful than waxing?
Oh and how long until the hair starts to grow back?
I’ve never done it but am considering doing it for the wedding since we are going straight on a honeymoon where I will be in a bathingsuit the whole time and don’t want to have to worry about shaving.
So is the pain worth it?

My first wax? Pain was probably about an 11. It was awful. (Admittedly, I have a low pain threshold… My bff/moh went with me and she said it was a 4 for her.)
Every other subsequent wax? 3-5. Not bad at all.
Hair starts to grow back after about 2 weeks. TOTALLY worth it. Also, the best thing I did was get my first wax over a month before the wedding, and my second one a few days before the big day. The second time around it was MUCH less painful, the recovery was easier and faster, and no hairs were missed. I’ve been waxing ever since because it’s so much easier and nicer than shaving… 10 minutes of pain for about 3-4 weeks of not having to shave!

@kris325: Shaving isn’t supposed to be painful. I’m not trying to be snarky, but are you sure you’re doing it right? And why on earth do you shave every night? Surely no one’s hair grows back that quickly!
If you’re in that much pain from a razor I don’t know if you would be able to handle the pain from waxing.

@kris325: “And I shave every night.”
That’s why it hurts. You’re destroying your skin and irritating it by overshaving. You’ll end up with ingrown hairs and I’ll bet you have razor burn. Hair does not grow that fast. You don’t need to shave every night.

@JaneIsGo: It’s the razor burn from the shaving that hurts. I also have very sensative skin in that area so the (especially bikini line) hurts pretty bad.
I shave every night because the stubble grows back during the day and is rough and similar to sand paper so I shave it which is likely why I get razor burn so much is from shaving so much

Waxing hurts, no way around that, but I think it definitely is more comfortable once it’s over with than shaving. The hair grows back finer, and you don’t get that razor irritation. Shaving that area everyday is why it’s hurting you. Just get waxed! It hurts, but it’s tolerable.

your first time will hurt for sure ! But after that, you’ll be fine 🙂
On a very positive note, the pain only lasts about a minute! When I walk out, I’m a little sore for a couple minutes, but no more pain 🙂

I’m feeling a bit more confident about it now, thank you ladies. A bit freaked still but better too…
I’ve been considering going the wax route for years since the shaving is so irritating but always afraid of the pain.

I say go with the wax. You’ll be in pain once (yeah, it hurts like a mo-fo), but it’ll be over soon enough and the results will be more than worth the pain, not to mention not needing to wax for another few weeks. I can’t imagine trying to shave down there on a regular basis – I tried once and nicked myself..ouuuch. The razor burn isn’t fun either.
The amount of pain you have depends on you tolerance for pain, the type of hair you have, the skills of the waxer and the type of wax used. The first time will be the worst. Just make sure you go to a professional waxer, not a nail salon that has a teeny, tiny waxing room in the back.

OUCH! Yeah, please don’t shave every night. That’s probably why it hurts so much.
I guess I am lucky because I shave, like, 90% of my hair “down there” about 1-2 times a week and I do not ever get bumps or irritation. And I use a regular old Venus razor and Dove Soap.
Have you considered using shaving gel or a “bikini area” specific product? I see them all the time in the shaving aisle. They also have bikini area specific razors or trimmers so you might want to try those.
Honestly, I think you should let the hair grown in for, like, a week or two and let your skin heel. It might feel gross at first but it sounds like your skin is too irritated to shave OR get a wax. Then once you heel, try shaving with bikini area specific products and see if that does the trick.
Good luck and I hope you don’t have to get a bikini wax! lol

@Stace126: Agree! I’m lucky to have light colored hair and sparse body hair. I shave my bikini area once a week and I can get away with shaving my legs once a month in the summer. Seriously lucky.
OP, you are definitely over shaving your poor, delicate skin! Give the shaving a rest for a week and let the hair grow out a bit.

I don’t know- getting waxed has never been too bad (i picked 4)- and honestly when it hurts it is only for like a few seconds. End results are much better than shaving

I didn’t realize shaving every day was a big deal at all. Figured it was just normal.
I do take a 5 or so day break once a month when I’m on my cycle but that’s it. Shave every day besides those days.
I can go weeks without shaving my legs and all is well, same thing with my arms. I have blonde hairs for my legs and arms but for some reason my lower region, the hair is thick and coarse. So I shave because it itches too when the hair starts to grow back

I only tried waxing one time. Never again. I don’t even shave, just “trim” now and then. Luckily, FH likes me “au naturale”.

Ditto on not shaving every day! Nothing gets shaved daily on me!
And you’re not shaving upward too are you? My undies would be sticking to my stubble and that hurts!
I got waxed once and only once. It made red bumps for days, kind of defeated the whole purpose if I couldn’t wear my bikini!
