Spotting/No period first cycle after coming off BC?

It’s absolutely normal.  I highly recommend using OPKs and temping for at least the first few cycles off BC so you know what’s going on.  Otherwise it’s an absolute crap shoot.  My first period/cycle was totally normal, then my second period I ended up bleeding only 5 days post ovulation, then my last period finally got its act together but I ovulated late.  If I hadn’t been tracking ovulation I would have thought my period was “late” but it wasn’t, I just ovulated on cycle day 19 instead of 14.  I only knew that because of OPKs and charting.

Moral of the story – collect as much data as you can now so when you’re actively TTC, you’ve got a handle on where your body’s at.  And be patient!  Coming off BC can be a process and things can be wonky for a while.

ETA: I use Pregmate OPKs and HCG tests off Amazon, they come 50 to a box and are really cheap.

Charliejeorge :  Yes, the OPKs are dippable pee sticks.  I usually start taking them around cycle day 8-10, or when I see eggwhite CM.  Temping is helpful because it actually CONFIRMS ovulation – OPKs can show you your LH surge, which indicates ovulation is likely/coming soon, but seeing your BBT go up (and stay up) is the only way to confirm ovulation on the prior day.  Your temps should stay high throughout your luteal phase, and mine usually start dropping around cycle day 12 which indicates AF is about to show (usually 13 or 14DPO).

I use a little $7 BBT thermometer I got from Target (in the preggo test section) and I set my alarm to temp at the same time every day, 5am.  It’s really satisfying to keep track of all the signs and symptoms on a chart so that you really know what’s going on!

Charliejeorge :  Sounds like a plan!  Good luck and don’t hesitate to reach out with questions.  It’s amazing what you can tell is happening just by tracking BBT and CM.

Charliejeorge :  I also had irregular periods and weird symptoms and things after coming of BC. I agree with PPs on OPKs and temping. I used the Kindara app for temping, combined with OPKs when I thought I was close to ovulating, and we got pregnant in a little less than 3 months. The success rate for each couple will of course differ, and there are tons of factors that come into play for fertility. But for me, it really helped because I have PCOS and weird cycles, and then being on and coming off BC made them even more jacked up.

@Charliejeorge:  Hi! Just checking in. We seem to be on the same schedule. I went off BCP in January of this year after being on them for 10 years. I finally got my first period (or at least, something most resembling a period) a few days ago after about 100 days. There was some spotting within there but it’s still so frustrating. Did you ever normalize? I’ve been temping and charting and everything but can’t figure out where I am in a cycle!
