I learned this lesson the hard way – the inside of my dress is now orange!! I got a spray tan on the Thursday night and our wedding was Saturday afternoon. It still rubbed off on my dress. I haven’t had the dress dry cleaned so I don’t know if it will come out or not.

I’m not selling my dress and the outside is totally fine so I find it more of a funny memory than anything!

@baletrina: awh! do you know what type of fabric it was?? I’m planning on getting an airbrush tan but since I’ll shower before it shouldn’t rub off. I’ve worn a lot of white clothing after I’ve showered the day after an airbrush tan and nothing has ever rubbed off. But I’m not sure if differen’t fabrics would make it that way? I don’t know. I’ll ask my alterations lady since she has done alterations for pageants for 15+ years and has probably seen a ton of fake tans.

@mrsmoody: did you get a spray tan or an airbrush tan?

I work at a tanning salon….The only advice i can give is DO NOT spray in the mystic….Find a salon that has the versa spa…works 20 times better then anything else out there right now…wont turn you orange and wont make you streak….google it! Its amazing!!!! Like any spray tan though you can shower 4-6 hours afterwards but the versa spray will not stain clothes at alll……

I got spray-tanned on the Thursday night, married on the Saturday at 3pm.

The spray tan did rub off on my dress but really only where it “gripped” me – so under the armpits and where the boning was.

My dress was polyester and the tan all came out when I washed it in the bath.

I saw it on a friends dress (not a great look sorry to say).

@FutureMrs.Moore: Hmm…yeah that definitely wouldn’t look good to have a tan rub off on the outside of my wedding dress where everyone can see. Maybe she got a mystic tan? I just have never had any problems with airbrush tans, and they make me look and feel better.

I’ve never done a spray tan, but I asked about it at a local tanning salon that has a Versaspa. They said you can get different colors. If you get the clear one (which I dont’ understand since I haven’t gotten one) nothing will rub off, but if you get a darker tint then it may. She said you still get color from the clear one. Hope that helps!

@BluegrassBridetoBee:

I would definitely go with a hand applied spray tan.  Machines can leave you with missed areas, which I wouldn’t trust for your wedding day.  The bronzer, which is just a cosmetic that gives you instant gratification, is what can rub off on clothes but it will wash off on your first shower.  DHA is the other part of the solution that is actually going to give you your sunless tan and it usually takes up to 12 hours to fully develop. The clear solution is just the DHA without the cosmetic bronzer.  I personally tan a lot of brides, most of who use the solution with bronzer, and have not had any of them complain about it coming off on their dress.  I would recommend getting it done 2 days before the wedding.

this is exactly why I’m using tanning beds…only a few seesions, but I usually use a self tanning lotion and have been spray tanned as well.  Not only does it smell funny (at least the lotion) for a day or two later, but it does rub off on the inside of your clothes.  It does come out in the wash, but I did not want brownish marks under my arms or inside my dress.

I did an Ortanic Spray Tan for my wedding. It looked natural, definitely not orange. I had it done the Wednesday before the wedding, took my first shower (a light one), and then was careful until the day of the wedding. I loved it and recommend it to anyone. I did it because I ran out of time to tan in a tanning bed.

I had my spray tan 4 days before, of course showered in the meantime and the inside of my dress was orange as well! (I was told it wouldn’t and I paid extra for the airbrush tan)

However, I still haven’t taken it to get dry cleaned and I’m hopeful that it will come out. It’s like the other bee, said it’ll be a funny memory as I’m not selling my dress and it’ll be for my daughters.

Maybe you can ask around knowing what you doing now? Maybe there are different kinds of different products used so that they don’t rub off? I know a friend of mine told me there is a “sealant” for some spray tans…?

Best of luck to you and happy wedding day!

Jamie

I spray tanned for my bridal shower three days before and it still rubbed off on my dress and on all the dresss on the friends that went with me. And when it started to come off my skin it was as if I was dirty. So gross
