Since Fiance & I are going to be combining households this summer/fall, I’ve been in massive spring cleaning mode. Anyone else doing the same?
Over the last 2 wks I went through a massive closet overhaul – I live in Chicago so city closet space is at a premium so it’s like I’ve been playing a game of “What Not To Wear” on myself. Getting rid of anything with holes or that I haven’t worn in awhile/likely won’t wear – especially things like 5K race tees that take over all the real estate in your drawers – and replacing things that need replacing. I traded my nicer castoffs over at Crossroads & got a pink Marc Jacobs trench in exchange – awesome! Also took in a few things that need tailoring which I love doing because it’s always like getting brand new clothes back when things fit exactly right. Then I went shopping for a few missing staples – somehow I had zero cardigans and only one pair of jeans so I bought a funky pair of purple skinny jeans & a couple sweaters since everything winterish is on sale. Wardrobe complete!
Now it’s time to move on to the basement and garage *shudder* I have let so much nonsense accumulate in the last 4 yrs since I have been living in this place! GAH. Anyone else feeling the pressure to purge in anticipation of moving in with your man?

Cleaning out my closet? Yes! But not because we are moving in together. FH’s father passed away earlier this year and we just moved his mom into a smaller apartment. We really had to throw away/donate lots of old stuff she didn’t need anymore. It was so cathartic that we came home and started doing it ourselves! so far we have given away about four garbage bags of clothes, two boxes of books and media, and tossed lots of stuff we don’t need that no one would want.
its also interesting when I start examining the emotional attachment I have to certain objects! I still have these awesome pumas from college that I refuse to give away because I love them so much- it’s not like I wear them anymore! And I have this adorable BR wrap shirt that is really unflattering on me and is now too big but I also refuse to give away because I never wore it. I’m aiming to rid myself of those things by the summer.

@maplemag: that is exactly what I am talking about. I had a really unflattering-on-me handful of nice dresses and skirts from J.Crew, BR, etc so I traded them to Crossroads and got a fly coat! Woot. And I pick up my tailoring today which is exciting. Hurray for new-old clothes!
I’m sorry to hear about your loss but awesome that you are also in purge mode and feeling good about it! No need to hold onto clothes that aren’t doing you any favors & there’s always the trade shops where you can try to take your nicer stuff like Crossraods Trading, Plato’s Closet, Buffalo Exchange, etc. Take your unflattering BR skirt there and get a flattering one in return!

Oh the purging doesn’t stop after you move in. I got rid of tons of clothes before we moved into our first apartment, and we still had to make weekly Goodwill trips after the move. We realized that we had too many plates, too much furniture, 2 hand mixers, 2 vacuum cleaners…stuff like that. In retrospect, I should have gone through my kitchen/household stuff beforehand and given the things we didn’t need to my old roommate. Even in our new (and much bigger) house we’re still finding old things to get rid of.

@bleusteel: that’s an awesome tip to go through our kitchen stuff & see what we have doubles of. I have nicer dishware but he has nicer appliances!
