The first oval is definitely better than the second oval. Looking at the videos though, the round totally outperforms the oval, no question. I’m pretty sure an ideal round would always outperform any oval, no matter how great the oval is, but the difference in that video was really striking to me.

True. Rounds always win! The round is $880 more though, and I’m having a hard time stretching what the insurance gave me. I am so annoyed with myself for losing something that meant so much to me. It’s not much fun downgrading just 3 years after upgrading. :(. I may take a break from looking. I’m not feeling like a new ring will have any sentimental value at this point.

no not just you. I see what you’re talking about. I still like the ones you have anyway. It’s hard to tell, even with pictures!

I have a round solitaire which I adore, but that oval is BREATHTAKING! Love!!

I normally side with rounds, but in this case, I’m feeling the oval for some reason.
Also, can I just say that the title of this thread is cracking me up. SQUARE off: oval vs round. SQUARE. Absolutely dying of laughter.

@Heidibrooke: Go with the oval. If the round were to chip, you’d lose a lot of value since it drops from a 1ct to a 9.XX! The oval you picked is a gorgeous one too!

I made my decision, and I feel good about it. I’m going with the oval. 🙂 I like that it’s slightly unusual without being too extreme, and I like that it’s internally flawless too. It will be my daughter’s someday, for whatever she chooses to do with it. Knowing that it will be an heirloom piece adds sentimental value. I’m trying to find an emotional connection. 😉
I will have it appraised before having it set, and insured! 🙂
Thanks again for helping me make a decision!!

@Heidibrooke: Could you please tell me what your Oval’s mm x mm size is? And what’s your finger size? I’m looking at getting an oval. Would really appreciate it, but hopefully someone hasn’t asked this already! Thanks 🙂

My oval is is 7.95×5.17×3.10, which is considered ideal proportions. I found the depth and table proportions chart at pricescope very helpful! I think the ideal ratio is 1.33-1.66, I think! Mine is a ratio of 1:53. I think that is more of a personal preference though. For me, I think the perfect ratio would have been 1:45. My ring size is 4.5, but because I hadn’t wore a ring in a few weeks, I was sized at a 5. Hope this helps, and you find just what you’re looking for! 🙂

I’m so happy that you chose the oval! Like you said, “it’s slightly unusual without being too extreme.” I think that why the oval is definitely on my radar.
Can’t wait to see pictures!
