I mainly need to know how much you actually feed them as a puppy and adult and what kind of food you feed them? Kibbles? Raw meat? Mixture?
I have always wanted a Saint. Now, before anyone (and by anyone I mean those who don’t own saints) starts telling me how much they drool and how big they are, I know. That’s not the intent of this post. I have done a LOT of research on St. Bernards. I have wanted one since I was about 13 years old, and now that we’re moving into a house, I’ll have the space and means necessary to care for a dog that size.
I just keep finding conflicting opinions on how much to feed a saint. One of the breeders I was looking at getting one through said she feeds her saints 8-9 cups of dog food TWICE a day. I thought that was very high, especially since St. Bernards are prone to bloat. On the St. Bernard club of America’s website, they said approx. 6 cups a day. This seems to be the average on many of the websites I’ve visited of people who own them as well.
I want to know because this is the only thing hindering me from owning a saint. We have the money to own one, but if I have to feed the dog 18 cups of dog food a day, that means Illl be buying 4-6 big bags of dog food a month (that would equate to maybe $300 a month on food alone) . I can swing yearly expenses of taking the dog to the vet, but 4-6 bags of dog food in one month just makes me a little unsure.
If any who owns or grew up with saints can offer any insight, that would be great. Please don’t hesitate to tell me the ups and down of these dogs if you own one either. I would love to know how much you love your saint! Thanks!
EDIT: I’m so sorry if the post is all smooshed together. I swear I put in paragraphs!
