Did you ever got to Carl’s off Manchester? You lived nearby and so do I. Love their burgers and onion rings, and the best hangover meal is a burger plus the highly questionable but fabulous tamale with BBQ sauce.

I did! I actually lived right off Manchester and McKnight, so Carl’s and Trainwreck were frequent haunts. I loved the root beer at Carl’s.
If you haven’t ever been, once things are safe, check out Mama’s on the Hill. It has the best toasted ravioli in the whole city, in my opinion. Absolutely amazing.
Man, I’m really missing my hometown now. I want to go back so bad. I haven’t been since we moved in July 2019, between my job and the pandemic. ๐
I have never been there, but here is a link to a couple of posts about St. Louis on website PLACEyak: https://placeyak.com/2016/10/17/missouri/
I liked living in the CWE but I did experience a lot of property crime, much more than when I have lived in other big cities. My car got broken into so many times that I ended up leaving a note on the window that it was unlocked and empty (even just leaving it unlocked without the note didn’t work because it seemed they would use a tool that broke the lock mechanism without even trying the door?). It is a great place to live, but I would definitely recommend looking for a place with secure parking.
but OP, I’m from STL! People already touched on a lot, but in general I moved away at 19 and every year I go back I am blown away with how much there is to do there (and a lot of it is free). I’m on the east coast now, but STL and thin crust pizza and gooey butter cake have my heart.
As for Imo’s Pizza, I really think you had to grow up with it in order to love it. People who didn’t and try it think it’s disgusting, and making fun of provel seems to be a sport. I like all kinds of pizza, including regular thicker crust and Chicago deep dish. But a bacon mushroom and onion lmo’s, cooked “well done” is sooooo good!
I have a recipe for the gooey butter cake that is so simple. It is a hit whenever I take it somewhere.
Another important St Louis thing that cannot be beat his Lion’s Choice! I’ve been eating there since I was a kid and it has not changed one bit. It still tastes exactly the same and really is the only fast food that I eat. I lived on the West coast for a while, and Lion’s Choice was always the first place I stopped when I got back to St Louis. Like on the drive from the airport to my mom’s house lol ๐๐คค
I will say that I am a St. Louis transplant (originally from central IL) but my husband is a true St. Louisan, and I have grown to appreciate IMO’s pizza! But I love all cheese, so provel wasn’t a huge stretch for me! But he loves IMOs and he loves pizza so he orders it a lot.
I actually grew up on gooey butter cake, my mom had an amazing recipe and my IL’s always ask me to make it for everything! I even do a pumpkin one for Thanksgiving every year. As for the commercially prepared ones, you can’t beat Park Avenue Coffee’s!
And just saw that Gioa’s on the hill has their fish sandwich back, and I will be there like every Friday!
