My honeymoon was booked months ago and is now 2 short months away! When I initially booked I read the various reviews that mentioned the birds, bats, frogs, lizards and mosquitoes that may or may not make an appearance in your room at Ladera. It does only have 3 walls afterall, and you’re basically in the jungle. I’m not freaked out by a few critter visits and was sort of looking forward to the lizards. I think they’re cute!
But last night I stumbled across a review that mentioned spiders. Spiders are a dealbreaker and now I’m considering cancelling/re-routing our trip. We’re currently scheduled to do a few days in a regular resort in Barbadoes and then catch a flight over to St. Lucia for a more secluded experience at Ladera. The spiders have me in meltdown mode. Can anyone who has been talk me off the edge here? Please tell me the tarantula sightings are an unlikely event rather than the norm!

@SkatinChic98: your honeymoon sounds really similar to mine! I am spending 5 nights in NYC then going to Barbados for a week and then on to St Lucia for a week. We are staying at the Sugar Beach in St Lucia.
am also a bit concerned about the bugs etc and I do seem to be v tasty to the mozzies :(…so would be interested to know what the replies are.
hope you don’t need to cancel and have a fabulous time 🙂

The most common spider on St Lucia is the tarantula but they are usually harmless to humans. In fact they usually hide from humans. Are they creepy and scary- yep becuase they can be quite large but they rarely attack humans. But they are rarely seen by tourists. Unfotunately (or fortunately for tourists scared of spiders) a lot of resorts spray for bugs. I would probably be more concerned by what the resort is spraying than bugs themselves.
Infact the spiders do a good job of keep those other creepy crawlys and mozzies away from you.

There are lots of “exotic” creatures in the Caribbean… many more so on an Island like St Lucia which is a Tropical Rainforest.
Including Spiders… and YES there are Tarantulas (altho in reality most of these Spiders ARE NOT HARMFUL to Humans). BUT they can be quite HUGE.
Personally, as pretty as the pictures look, I could never stay in accommodations with an OPEN WALL… I just would never be able to sleep… even back here home in Canada, I need something between me and the rest of the world when sleeping and taking in the great outdoors… (at minimum a tent)
Honestly if I went to St Lucia and wanted to be near the Pitons… I’d be looking instead at the nearby Jalhousie Plantation / Sugar Beach Resort and one of their villas.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I’m back from my honeymoon and I survived without one tarantula sighting. Tons of moths, but they didn’t bother me. I have to say, Ladera was OUT OF THIS WORLD BEAUTIFUL. PrincessIncognito, definitely take a trip up there for lunch! We stopped by Sugar Beach one day since Ladera guests are given beach access there. Sugar Beach was gorgeous. I was annoyed with them because they ask Ladera guests to pay 20$ per person to use their beach chairs, but if you’re a guest there I imagine you’d have a fabulous time.

We have clients at Ladera several times a year and they always come home happy. They do give you a squirt gun to keep the birds out. But we’ve never had a client complain about bugs. We did have a client that woke up with a lizard in their room, but they thought it was cool rather than creepy.
