I wasn’t, but a friend of mine was. She got a silver, high quality cz ring when her husband proposed and then they went ring shopping together. She now uses the cz ring as a stunt ring when she travels.

I thought it was an really good idea, because she got exactly what she wanted ring-wise, and he got to give her a surprise proposal with a ring.

Well way back when with my first marriage (circa 1980) when we were College Students my Ex-Hubby bought me a “Promise Ring” when we were in our last year at Uni (Fall Term) and he knew that after Graduation and our first summer working, he’d be Proposing / Buying my E-Ring.

So altho it wasn’t a Proposal with a Stand-In it essentially was a “place keeper” until the Proposal and my real ring.

It was a 14 Kt Gold Ring with my Birth Stone.  Nothing really fancy, but quite nice.

I noticed when Mr TTR and I were looking for rings, that many are now sold as Settings Only, and the feature diamonds are bought seperately.

You could always do that… in that most of these settings come with a CZ in them to “show” what they would look like in the store

In that way, you could have your “real ring” sooner, just wouldn’t have the whole package… until he saves up for the Feature Stone.

Or you could find a “stunt double” ring and get that in the meantime…

There are tons of companies now making CZ rings that look like the real thing… and are based on actual diamond settings that other companies are making

In that way, you’d have a ring you love right from the get go (a copy of the one you are waiting for) and something to use as a “stand in / stunt double” whenever your real ring is out being cleaned / repaired etc

I just stumbled on this site earlier, not sure about the quality but the reviews were good and if its only to serve as a stand in… Then why not! They call their diamond simulant Siberian Ice.

@echolove:  What about going to a store that specializes in silver jewelry and gemstones and picking one that you can use as as right hand ring later?

Really though I think you can explain to your parents that you are engaged but the ring is being customized. You don’t NEED a ring to prove you’re engaged.

Unless you find a ring you genuinely like that you would actually wear for a right hand ring, then why bother spending the money?

How about something you would like as a RHR (try Etsy, Blue Nile or Zales for pretty pieces at reasonable prices) or getting the band that you’ll eventually wear with your ring? That way you will have a piece of jewelry that you will still wear forever.

I was proposed to with a stunt double that was the same style of my e-ring but my e-ring wont be done for another 3 weeks.

My stunt double has a 1.2 aquamarine center stone surronded by white sapphires in a halo and on the band 14k white gold. My custom is 18k white gold with a 1.70 center diamond set in a halo and diamonds along the band for a tw of 2.4.

Here is my stunt double.

@echolove:  Well I was proposed to with no ring at all and we got married the same day with a band that I borrowed from my Mother-In-Law. I wore my promise ring for about a year until I got my official set. If I could do it all over again and I knew ahead of time we were going to be married I would just pick a plain gold band and then get the e-ring later.
