Hi Y’all, I am wondering…
Every time I get a plain ol’ unsweetened black iced tea from Starbucks, after a few sips I get horrible gas cramps. OK, Too Much Information, but wtf? Does this happen to anyone else?
At first I thought it was just a coincidence but after not having any iced tea for a week and then having a couple sips just now, I know it’s the tea. I should add I have never had this problem with other tea. Just Starbucks!
Do they have secret devil ingredients? Thanks for letting me get this out there!

@emmalyn: I get that when I drink tea from *anywhere*, so you are not alone 😡

This never happens to me and I love their too. Sorry! I would check out their nutritional info on their website and compare it to other teas you drink.

I used to work at Starbucks and their black iced tea is just an oversized “Awake” tea bag…they make it every day, so it’s not in a carton or anything. Maybe it’s the shaking? Might introduce some extra air into the drink that doesn’t do well in your system. That’s so wierd! Does it happen if you drink the “Awake” tea hot, or if you have any of the other iced teas?

@emmalyn: Em!!! Do you drink black tea any other time? I know that any type of black tea has this affect on me. I’m okay with green tea and white tea, but black tea is stronger and upsets my stomach. I don’t really have an answer, but wanted to let you know you aren’t alone!

@emmalyn: I can get this with some coffee

no gas cramps, just the constant urge to pee! i get the “venti green shaken tea sweetened” and will pee about 5 times before I finish it. Green tea makes me pee like no ones business. WAY better than what happens when they give me whole milk chocolate milk though…

@Audrey2_sings: do you know what the green tea is made from/with?!?!?!? I try to find similar tea tastes all the time but with no luck and I would love to know which type of tea or where to get it!

@cooperlove: The green tea is made with the Tazo Zen tea- a blend of green tea, spearmint, and lemongrass. You can find it in most grocery stores, or just buy a box of the tea bags from Starbucks! Usually in the summer they’ll have special “iced tea” bags as well, but I think they are just bigger. It’s such a yummy green tea!

Tea Granny here
(lol, that is what Mr TTR has been known to call me cause I LOVE my tea, and drink a lot of it)
I’ve never had any issues with Tea from Starbucks… but here is a thought
Are you a Coffee Drinker at all ?
I drink coffee sometimes, but it isn’t a drink that agrees with me because it seems to have a bit of a laxative effect on me (coffee does this to many people)
So if you are getting gassy from Tea made at a Coffee Shop, there is a possibility that they may be utilizing their coffee machinery in some way to make that tea product
Examples… If they pour off the hot water from the coffee urn (ie goes thru the coffee basket / funnel… OR if the water sits in carafes that are used for coffee… OR serving pitchers)… in so much as Coffee is a strong flavouring and can infuse itself into solid materials… especially if they are plastic. Less so if there is Glass or Stainless Steel.. but even then in some cases that can still happen (if the item has been used for eons to make / serve Coffee)
This is a pet-peeve of mine… and the same reason, I cannot drink Tea made utilizing Hotel Room Coffee Makers… it always end up tasting more like Coffee than Tea to me.
And yes, sadly there are some Coffee Shops out there, who don’t know how to make a good cuppa tea, or how important it is to Tea Drinkers to keep the items seperate.
(Definitely Coffee Shops I won’t go with Mr TTR cause of this… I want my Tea to taste like tea).
Hope this helps,

Black tea is fermented tea leaves (green and white tea is unfermented) so that may have something to do with it!

Caffeine and hot water are both intestinal stimulants, as far as I know. I know coffee does that to me. Very strong tea can do it as well.

@Audrey2_sings: THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH! I will get some tomorrow at the grocery store!!!

@This Time Round: I agree about the tea made in coffee makes. Yuck! Starbucks has separate containers for tea and iced coffee though, so they never mix. The hot tea is made by the cup as well, so while they are tea bags and not loose leaf, the coffee is never a part of it!
@cooperlove: You’re welcome!
