We are planning to get married at the end of April 2013 in Cuba and I have no idea when I should be sending out STD’s and invitations. We are not going to be booking our trip till this fall and figured we would send invites when we had booking information. Do you think this is too late? When would you send STD and invites?

It depends..we are getting married in Sept 2013 in another country and we sent out our Save the Dates at the end of April..we did so because we wanted to give our guests (which is a small number) the most amount of time to be able to save should they wish to attend.. We will send out the actual Invites around 6 months before…
If people will be paying for themselves then I would give them as much time as possible to make that decision… we sent out RSVP’s with the Save the Dates so that we can go to our B List should there be alot of No’s…
Hope that helps!

Only you know your guests well enough to make the decision. Will they have the financial means to book travel quickly after you send the invitations? If not, then you probably want to send the Save the Dates as soon as possible (you’re under a year out, so it’s reasonable).

@npartridge: I’m having my wedding the first week of May 2013 in Cuba. We have just started the planning processand have got the group quotes for the trip. We didnt have time to send out the save the dates I just basically told people by word of mouth when we were planning to have it. In your case you might want to send out save the dates now to let them know when you are planning to have the wedding so they can start planning fiancially for your wedding and for vacation time with there work. You will not know the exact date of your wedding until you choose a resort and confirm the date is available with them. If you have any questions about planning feel free to ask me especially since you are choosing Cuba I know all about there !!

We are having our wedding in CA, which is local for my family, but across the country or even out of the country for his family and some of our friends. So, we’re getting married in June 2013, but we are sending out Save the dates within the next few weeks so that people who are traveling can make travel arrangements and plans. June is also a super busy month for people with graduations and other weddings and vacations, so we wanted to give people the heads up so if they want to come, they can plan around it.

@npartridge: Hey, our wedding dates are quite close! We have just sent our Save-The-Date Cards last week as our wedding will be about 12 hours flight for most people to attend in Thailand, some are coming from USA, Canada, UK, Asia, Australia & New Zealand. Some Save-The-Date Cards I havent quite sent out as Im getting address confirmed but they will be going out in the next day or so. I am doing a simple free website which should be ready by June or July. I want to send out formal invites quite early but not sure what month (prob july/aug), the invites will have the website url on them so people can get more details for accom etc.

for destination wedding, I’d say 8 months.

It depends on your guests and on you. My goal was one year before the wedding. (But I’m the girl who wanted to send her invites out 4 months before the wedding.) Ours wasn’t exactly destination but guests still had to fly or drive a five hours for. I sent them out in June for a May wedding. I got them printed as soon as I had my venue booked. Whatever you do, don’t send Save-The-Date Cards to everyone before you have a date and venue. You don’t want to send Save-The-Date Cards to 700 guests and your venue only holds 200. I was told a year for destination weddings because many people plan their vacations a year in advance.
Guideline for invitations is 8 weeks but I feel I need a little more notice to find airline and hotel deals.

General rule of thumb is 6-8 months for Save-The-Date Cards, and 6-8 weeks for invitations. BUT, since you’re having a Destination Wedding, you might want to bump those timelines up a bit. All of our guests are from Out of Town, for example, so we sent out Save-The-Date Cards at the one-year mark, and will send our invites 3-4 months out.
