If you’re having a destination or holiday weekend wedding, one year is usually customary.  That said, there’s no set rule for when they should go out otherwise.  We got ours about six months before the date…but more time or less notice is usually fine as well!  The only "too early" scenario I’d avoid is if you haven’t booked several main vendors yet — since there’s a chance you might change your date to accomodate, for example, a photographer you really want.  Good luck!

It kind of depends on how many of your guests are out of town.  I think if most are close by, then 6 months is plenty.  If the majority of your guests need to make travel plans, I would suggest 9 to 12 months.  Most of our guests are out of town (5+ hours away), so even though it’s not a destination wedding for us, it is for a lot of our guests, so we are planning on sending ours out at the 9 or 10 month mark.

@peakay – I think the main reason to send them out is for out-of-towners.  You can read about it at the Weddingbee Wiki here:

I would send them anywhere between 6-9 months for a summer/holiday wedding and about 6 months for a regular date. We’re sending them out at about 6 months ahead for our vow renewal, but mainly it’s just to let people that we’ve FINALLY decided to do it and to get a little more letterpress in my life. Most of our guests will be from in-town, but we all have really busy schedules, so I figured it couldn’t hurt.

We sent ours out at right about the 8-month mark.  Our wedding is in October, so we actually mailed them on Valentine’s Day.  I wanted to wait until after the holiday rush was over, so the Save-The-Date Cards wouldn’t get lost in the shuffle.  Pretty much all our guests are Out of Town.  I did set up hotel blocks prior to sending them out.  We also made our wedding website so people could check that for updates, and added the url to the Save-The-Date Cards.
