I would send them without now and be prepared to call them to expedite later in the process if they don’t come on time.

I would call the passport center and ask them how realistic that 4-6 weeks is and if there is a way you could pick them up in person if they do not make it (that is if you are close enough to a passport center). It seems like you have more than double the allotted time but I would still be nervous aiting for them. I think I would try and do it the normal way but call to check up on them in 4 weeks in this situation.

I don’t know if you can change the status to expedite but I do know you can call and check on the status of your passport renewal throguh the process. You can also call and ask ahead of time how accurate they are and they will tell you if they anticipate any upcoming backlogs due to holidays or somethign you may have not taken into account. I know mine got stuck up in Columbus day back log so even though one person said it would be on time another employee told me I should have expedited. I guess you just have to hope ou are getting good info but it sounds like you are not terribly late.

We sent the paperwork in for my great niece’s passport, with complicated custody issues, August and and it was back in Sept.  This was when they changed all the rules about where you need to get a passport too, we thought we would have to stalk… but it was fine.

Yeah…I agree with @MissAsB.

Also, Fiance applied for his back in February and got his passport in the mail two weeks later. You’d be surprised…the turnaround time is pretty impressive!

I ordered my passport back in May and it took exactly 3 weeks to get mine. My Fiance ordered his the first week of June and it took between 5 and 6 weeks for him to get his. I was nervous since we were leaving for Ireland in late July, so we express shipped his to shave a few days off of the time and it was only like $14 extra. I felt the same as you though, we def didn’t have the money to expedite the passport so we just took the chance and we got ours in plenty of time.

I had to renew mine last Oct and it took me about 3 weeks to get it.  A lot faster than I expected.

The estimate on the website is pretty accurate.  Get the application out tomorrow and you should be fine.  There is a space on the application for you to put when you are traveling, probably so that they can get it back to you in time.

@UpstateCait:  With a 4-6 week processing time, you should be fine if you do it in the next week or 2.  A few years ago, the State Department mandated that everyone had to have a passport to cross the Canadian & Mexican borders, so that caused a huge backlog in the system & the turnaround times were insanely long.  However, there’s no initiative like that currently that should prolong the process.  As long as you get it in sooner rather than later, you should be able to avoid any expedite fees.
