There are many ways to do Europe on a budget. Going off season, definitely helps.  If you can postpone going until December or January you may be able to do it cheaper. Also there are certainly differences in prices depending on where you go. If you share your price range, maybe we can offer some suggestions. I would advise against going next summer, summer is peak season.  It is more expensive and more crowded as well.

Where are you located and what’s your budget??  You could likely make it work.  We also intend to do europe (i’ve been Fiance hasn’t)

Does’nt your Fiance realize there are beaches in europe too?  No reason you both can’t be happy.

@SailorGabby77: Well, I went for 3 weeks to Ireland and spent a little more than $2500, mostly on airfare. That is the biggest burden. There are lots of ways to do Europe, well Ireland I know, for not expensive. Stay in hostels, there are a lot that are nicer than many American budget hotels, and B&Bs run by farmer families who have some extra rooms. If you really want to do it and will be disappointed in anything else, is there anything to cut from your wedding to help for your honeymoon? I agree, give us a budget and more specific locations and there are lots of Bee’s who travel and can give you tips.

Fiance and I were debating between going to an AI destination or to Europe.  Although we really want to go to Europe, we’ve decided that after all of the stresses of planning the wedding, we’ll really just want to relax on a beach somewhere, plus, it’s just going to be too expensive at the moment.  Instead, we’ve pledged that no matter what happens, we will be going at the VERY latest on our 10th anniversary (but we’re planning for our fifth!).  Maybe you could have a similar promise between you and your FI?

we are never satisfied are we?

i would KIL to go to Jamaca,  yet we are like you,  trying to spend within our budget,  and i live in UK,  and we are going on a med cruise to Italy, Spain and Monte Carlo.  sounds great right?   so why am i yearning for faraway shores like Austrailia, Jamaca,  Miami, or Hawaii?

@Sprinkled with fairydust:

funny isnt it?  I get so jealous when I see flights from london to ibiza advertisied for 30 euos by ryan air. and how much it would cost me from here is much more than 30 euros.  but jamaica and miami is easily a long weekend for me.  if only we could trade…lol.

@MASPA:

LOL,

for starters,  Ibiza is not a great place,  i went and wanted to come home the SAME DAY!   and RYANAIR  is the worst possible airline you could fly with……please dont be jealous.

other spanish islands are really nice,  but Ibiza is just too  in-yer-face, spain is a 2 hour flight for me,  so could easily be done for a weekend trip,  but it gets a bit samey. i have never been to Italy, so thats somewhere close…(3 hour flight)  that we might be trying THIS year,  the cruise honeymoon is next August,  but i really feel the need to get away this year.

@Sprinkled with fairydust:  Ok maybe not Ibiza, but definitely Mallorca.  Fiance and I intend to go to Malta.  I’ve never been to Italy either, I hope you enjoy it!!

@MASPA:

Majorca  (Mallorca)  is really nice.  never been to Malta,  and CANT WAIT  to go to Italy.  but if its spanish you want,  maiinland spain IMHO  is nicer than the islands.  do some research and i am pretty sure most would agree.  its also cheaper mainland

Here’s something to consider, do you really want a 10+ hour flight after all the stress of your wedding planning?  A gf of mine went to Greece, they were jetlagged, cranky, argued a lot, and planned too much to do because they didn’t want to ‘waste’ their time there after the flight.

We went to Belize.  short flight, exotic people, great trip.  Being fresh off our honeymoon last week – it doesn’t matter where you go, I think you’ll really enjoy the adventure as husband and wife!!  I hope you guys find a nice compromise.

What is it about those other places that you like.  The four you mentioned, NZ, AUS, UK and IRE are all so different. Can you find a similar “thing,” whatever it is you’re seeking, in a closer, more economical trip?

@Sprinkled with fairydust: I’ve been to mainland spain, I loved it.  I highly recommend it.

Inexpensive and an overnight flight away.  Fall asleep and wake up in spain.  not too shabby.

I would just say if you really cant make it to Europe now, keep a travel fund after the wedding and add to it whenever you can. That way you will know you are on your way to someday getting there!

I live in Europe, and there are definitely many cities where you can have an amazing trip on a budget. The PP’s are right- the flight is the biggest expense, but when it comes to hotel/hostel, food and activities, you can budget a lot!

@MASPA:

where did you stay?   i went to Salou , La Pineda and Barcelona…….mind you i didnt STAY in Barcelona because it is quite expensive there,  but staying in Salou is only an hours bus ride away from Barcelona so we just visited Barcelona once or twice on day trips. .  the flights from here are 2 hours,  so its pretty easy and fairly cheap.

we could have 2 weeks half board in Salou with flights included for around £1,000  for the two of us.   $1,500  approx……..thats a bargain. and thats in peak time,  if we were to wait until sept/oct,  then you could maybe save a further £2-300
