So for those of you who don’t know, I had breast reduction surgery last week. My recovery is going really well. The surgery was last Thursday and I’m already not on any pain meds. This in itself is wonderful as I was on pain meds all the time pre-surgery for back pain. So the fact that I don’t have to take meds for that is also awesome (my back still hurts a bit, but I think it’s more because I have to sleep at an angle, so that’s messing things up).
Anywho, my question today is about stitches. They used mostly disolvable stitches but where the incisions intersect and at the ends they used regular stitches for ‘extra security’. They come out next week. I’ve never had stitches removed and am not sure what to expect. Will it hurt? Will there be lots of bleeding? Anything I should do to ‘prep’ for having them taken out? Anything you have to offer would be great

My experience with stitches was no bleeding and tugging during removal. No big deal at all. I’m so glad things are healing well for you! No prep is needed for removal. Best wishes!

Wow it’s great that you are already doing well! I hope you just keep feeling better and better!i haven’t had this surgery but have a cleft lip and pallet so I have had many on my face in my life and had many a stitch out!
You should not have bleeding, if there is it would be tiny specs just if your skin has gotten a little stuck to the stitches. It doesn’t hurt, sometimes it is a little pinchy, again only if they’ve gotten a little stuck. But standard procedure is to clip and pull and then you’re done! Nothing to worry about 🙂

Shouldn’t hurt too much. I had disolvables after my c-section and it just felt WEIRD, but not painful. Then I had thread stitches in my leg after getting a precancerous mole removed and they had to take a huge chunk out. Those were a little painful because they were tied too tight. And my 4 year old just got through having thread stitches removed from his face and he didn’t fuss or cry at all.
You’ll be fine just remember to BREATHE! 🙂

I have never had problems with having stitches taken out. It just feels like “pulling” and might be a bit uncomfortable. Keep recovering!

So great you are already doing so well!
About the stitches, from what I remember it didn’t really hurt just maybe a little uncomfy but nothing like when they go in! 🙂 If the skin is dried on them it could hurt a LITTLE when they pull them out, but that is all.

When I had a reduction, my stitches were dissolvable (I think…it’s been 7 years). But I’ve had other stitches out and sometimes you can’t even feel it, others it just feels weird. You should not have bleeding or pain! Don’t worry!

It sort of tickles/tugs a little. It’s a weird sensation, but it dosen’t hurt. I took my own stiches out of my finger. I only had 8, and I realize that it’s a LOT different than breast tissue, but it’s not painful in the least. Good luck on the rest of your recovery!

Before you go in to get the sutures removed, be sure that you use warm wet washcloths as compresses to soften and gently remove any crusted drainage around the sutures. The suture material doesn’t stick to the skin, but the drainage can stick and make it tug a little when the suture is removed. No dried drainage? No problem.
Glas to hear your recovery is going well.

When I had them removed before, there was no pain/tugging. I just remember being soooo ready to have them out (they were in my arm) because they were dry and itchy. It was such a HUGE relief to get them out! I kept my insicision really clean, so once they were out you could barely see that there were stitches in the first place.
How did it go? How are you feeling?

@soyjoy222: The stitches actually aren’t coming out until later today and I cannot wait! They’re getting SUPER itchy. I actually only have a couple that need to be removed. They used mostly disolvable stitches, except for at the end of the incisions and where the incisions intersect, so there’s 7 total that need to be taken out.

It hurt at first because my foot was still really sore but it tickled a little bit.

i had some stitches out of my armpit 2 days ago after getting a cyst removed. it was fine, a little tug then out. felt a bit itchy for a few seconds. have also had stitches removed from my stomach after endo surgery a few years ago. actually i removed them myself lol as i was away frm my normal dr and other dr wanted to charge me too much. i think it will be fine for you, wont be painful im sure.

When I had my reduction, I remember the stitches removal hurting a bit. What was worse, in my opinion, was the drain removal.
