I cut myself very deep on my thumb sunday while cutting vegies (dang new sharp top chef knives!). I have been doing an extensive exercise plan and havent been able to keep it up since Sunday because I am exhausted and my hand hurts like hell. i can barely type let alone do pushups LOL
I emailed my MD but I know I wont hear from her today. so, just wondering what you ladies think, can I do cardio safely without hurting my stitches? Or do I have to wait until they stitches are out next week? 🙁
EDIT so I dont hear the “dont take medical advice from a forum posts” i am waiting my Dr response before doing anything. I am just curious of what others think and if others has had this experience. I wont be exercising today, i am still in too much pain. But I know that in a few days I am going to get really impatient and want to workout. I know I will hear from her tomorrow I was just curious. I will not take this advice in replace of my Drs advice.

I voted no, because I say no, but not necessarily because of bleeding. Whenever you have an injury like that you’re not supposed to work out for a week- just from what people have told me, not because I have cut my hand.

I would wait for your doctor’s response. Honestly, asking for real medical advice on a web forum is never a good idea… You need to hear from the doctor who knows the severity of the wound, pronogsis, etc.

@bestbuddies: I think it totally depends on the type of cardio. Does it involve lots of arm movements and punching? Then I’d say no. But if it’s “just” running, and you can wrap your hand up so the wound is well-supported, you could probably do it. If your thumb hurts while you’re exercising, stop and just take a walk or something.

ha, she did respond already!
I recommend no exercise using the hand at least until the stitches are removed. Cardio is OK as long as you are only using the hand to hold onto something for balance as long as it does not put weight on the hand.

In high school, I had to get 7 stitches across my face after a soccer game at a tournament. My teammate was at the ER with me and got 5 stitches on her forehead.
We both played in our soccer game that afternoon with just a bandaid to cover the stitches (and the doctors were fine with this). We also played in 2 more games that weekend.
I see no reason why you shouldn’t do cardio. (ETA: so long as it isn’t boxing or something!)
