I’ve had money in mutual funds and a Roth IRA since I was in my mid-teens.  Those accounts are managed by someone else at an investment advisory firm.

DH and I also both participated in our company stock purchase programs and we managed those stocks ourselves.

We view it as partially retirement savings (in addition to our 401Ks – which are also managed by someone else) and partially just as long-term savings that will bring us more ROI than having our money sitting in a savings account at the bank.

It’s a combination for me. I have a mutual fund, a Roth IRA and a company 401k that are managed by an investment firm.

I also have some money in a TD Ameritrade account that I manage independantly. It’s become one of my hobbies – I’m doing okay, but not well enough to quit my job to day trade.

I have both retirement and taxable money currently in mutual funds. I also have a savings account earning next to nothing.

I work in finance so I am not allowed to manage my own portfolio if I invest in regular stocks/bonds.

DH and I are probably going to open up investment accounts soon, but due to our restrictions on trading separately managed assets, we’ll have to have it wholly managed by a financial advisor and only really have a say over the general risk profile and allocation of the account rather than individual stock purchases and sale decisions.

DH has company stock and we have mutual funds.  We would start with buying index funds before actually buying stock in individual companies.
