@Cwoodward:  Sorry you are sick. 🙁 It sucks. I had it 2 weeks ago (not sure if it was “stomach flu” exactly, but I was throwing up & sick for 3 days). I just forced myself to drink water, gatorade, and I had soup when I felt like eating. If you get really dehydrated & can’t keep liquid down, you should hit the hospital so they can give you fluids via an IV. Feel better!

Boo!  This happened to me when I was about 6 months pregnant 🙁  I had severe vomiting, abdominal cramps, the works.  Ugh.  I called the nurse and explained that I couldn’t even hold down water or pedialyte and she said if after 8 hours I still can’t keep clear fluids down that I needed to go to L&D (labor & delivery) for fluids and to make sure I didn’t go into labor from being so dehydrated.

I stopped throwing up after 5 hours, and was able to take small sips of very watered down pedialyte with a lot of ice in it.  The next day I was able to keep down plain chicken broth.  It took 3 days before I could eat anything substantial.  I lost 4 pounds the first day, but the nurse said the baby will get the nutrients it needs from my teeth, bones, and fat stores, and that my #1 job in life should be to work on rehydrating.

It took maybe a week or so to put the weight back on that I had lost, and it definitely took 3-5 days until I was properly hydrated, but at no point did they indicate my baby was in danger at all.

I hope you feel better VERY SOON!

ETA- they told me when I could start eating real food to follow the BRAT diet- bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.

I got it during early pregnancy, it sucks! Get well soon! I just kept drinking water or whatever liquid sounded better than water, as water just tasted nasty like my mouth/throat!

@Cwoodward:  I got the stomach flu at 9 weeks, and I got dangerously dehydrated within about 5 hours, and was hospitalized. It was one of the most miserable experiences of my life! I think focus on sips of pedialyte or gastrolyte or whatever you have, but don’t be scared to go in if you can’t keep fluids down because it’s a lot easier to get seriously dehydrated while pregnant! And they gave me drugs that stopped the puking immediately. Hang in there.
