@Stormchild:  No, that’s certainly not too big.  That’s about equivalent to a 1.75 carat emerald, give or take 1/4 carat.  And emeralds tend to face up smaller than rounds, so in terms of table surface area it probably isn’t any bigger than a 1.5 carat round…which very few people would call “too big.”

Gemstones are generally darker and less scintillating than diamonds, therefore they can look more “reasonable”/”engagementy” at this type of size. I think yours will look nice, especially if it’s a darker color.

@Stormchild:  I think it will look great! I have a 2ct oval diamond, size 6 fingers, and it is very elegant, not too flashy. I do have long, skinny fingers, though, so that does help. Just remember that you’ll want to put a wedding band with it too! Post a pic!

@Stormchild:  I think a green amethyst of this size will be just beautiful. Please post it when you get it, I’m drooling in anticipation already! Tongue Out

Mine is even bigger. No one says it looks like a cocktail ring (because, well, that would be rude). If they think it, that’s their problem! Mine is a white sapphire. The rounded end is about the same size as my pinky nail.

My emerald has about the same dimensions. I love the size on my finger! I have had a few people comment that it looks big, or ask how big it is, but I don’t mind:)

I definitely don’t think that’s too big! I do think you will get comments about it being big, like @MrsT2009 does, but not neccessarily in a bad way: like, “wow, I love it! The stone is huge!” (And by the way, MrsT, I LOVE your ring! Gorgeous). So I would say, rock it: and post pictures once you do!!
