glycerine suppositories are harmless.   Anything you’d take orally, I’d check with your OB first, but I think colace is pretty harmless too – its OTC, so just check the label to make sure is not contraindicated.

My doc prescribed Colace for me when I was pregnant. She said that stool softeners were generally safe, it was the actual full on laxatives that she said can be dangerous during pregnancy. All the iron in the prenatals had me backed up like crazy, but drinking lots of liquids and taking the Colace helped a TON. 🙂

@DeadUtopia:  Ditto. I have had to take colace a couple times during my pregnancy.

My midwife actually switched my prenatal vitamin to CitraNatal, which already has a stool softner in it. That’s been a blessing. This is probably Too Much Information, but prior to this, I had spurts where I was going for up to 10 days!

Prune juice works wonders for me. I have 1 cup every other night or so before bed. It’s kinda nasty but 100% natural 🙂

Oh, I struggle so much with this issue.  I use Miralax and it definitely helps.  My doctor had no problems with me taking it.  Hope you find something that helps!  Ouch!

Ooh… the dreaded labor-poo… sorry to hear about that.

When I was PG with DS, there was a running joke about the McPoop solution; nothing like a Big Mac and fries to get things going.  Ditto PP about finding a multivitamin with stool softener, and then apricots are a great natural softener (work like prunes but taste better).

Fiber supplements like Metamucil or Citrucel are ok.

@inspiredcreations:  OMG! I always joke about this! I never thought anyone else did that! I would get so backed up and eating any burger and fries from McD’s would get me going again, but I HATE McD’s…LOL

@jholler25:  Also, make sure you’re getting enough water.  If you have issues with hard stools, sometimes dehydration can be an issue.  Check with your OB and see if you can take a daily probiotic.  I started taking Philips Colon Health and it’s really helped in a number of ways, but most notably in the frequency (able to go once a day) and the softness.  I used to get really bad hem’s that would last for days afterwards, and now that’s better as well.  Something to look into anyways… especially if this is a persistent problem and not just b/c of the PG.
