I never really gave it much thought. I have mine hanging in the garment bag from the bridal shop on the back of my closet door. I don’t think it will get moth eaten or start to yellow, unless it stays there for many years.

My Future Mother-In-Law who alters and makes dresses does say tha plastic will turn the fabric yellow.  She said the best bet is to wrap it the dress in a sheet, this way it can still “breathe”, won’t yellow, but the dust will stay off.

We were given a special dress bag and our bridal salon told us to store it in a room or closet that was cool and had circulation ie vents so air could circulate. Don’t just put it in any closet or room, basement, attic, etc. Make sure it’s in a cool, semi dark environment and you should be fine. I wouldn’t touch it with my bare hands, the oils from your skin will turn it. You can get muslin gloves for touching it and I wouldn’t try it on until fittings or be taking it in and out of the bag. Check on it from time to time and you should be fine!

I had my dress stored in a cloth garment bag (no plastic bag) before the wedding.  I would get it out of the plastic bag because those things don’t breathe at all.

Also, don’t worry about wrinkling.  Most dress shops will press your dress for you right before the wedding.

Oh! Mine is in cloth and then plastic – should I take the plastic off?

Good question! I never would have thought of that. I was worried about my dress getting wrinkled in the closet, but it will only be hanging for just over a month, so hopefully it will stay good as new!

Oh.. I never thought of this.  What will happen if you leave it in plastic? I left it in my mom’s closet whichi s across the country from me.  I’m interested in this question too.

Mine is in my mom’s closet, wrapped in a white cotton sheet and in the store’s garment bag (unzippered).  I read that the bags can make the dress yellow, even in a short period of time.  Then I freaked out and now my mom babies my gown.

I bought one off of ebay.  It was just a plain muslin bag I believe.  I had the dress stored in it for almost a year and nothing bad happened to it.

I’m guessing that a few months sitting in plastic isn’t going to hurt it.  However, I’m going to take a hint from some of the other posters and take mine out of the plastic when it arrives!
