It’s an age thing. The older I get (middle-aged) the less I care what others think and the more I tend to just speak what’s on my mind. At this point in life, I tend to keep my mouth shut if my opinion would hurt someone (like I would NEVER say something like that wedding dress is FUGLY), but I suspect that will change as I get older. I fully intend to offend everyone when I am old. It is one of the few advantages of getting old. I am planning on getting a Hove-Around in camo with a battering ram so watch out! LOL

I love ALL of the strapless dress pics!!!!!!

Regarding the rude grandma ….  you are not alone…  my grandma made a of reminding me that she voted ‘thumbs down’ on anything strapless for me…  I am getting an ivory lace bolero b/c I want to (I don’t like my arms) – but if I am dancing, that sucker might just come off and grandma will have to be in shock!

Something I thought of that no one else has said is maybe she doesn’t think of you as “big” like the girls on Big Bliss? I know you said you are a size 24 but two different girls can wear the same size and look completely different. Maybe she really doesn’t think of you as too big to wear strapless, so she wasn’t referring to you when she talked about “big girls.” At least that is what I would tell myself!

Maybe if you look hard enough grandma may come with an ignore button! I’m the kinda person that would go sit by her and tell her “nuttin like lettin it all hang out”

I think you are going to look amazing! Sure if you squeeze into a size 2 dress you may have some stuff hanging out but I doubt that will happen 🙂 Soooo… just ignore granny, get a dress altered to fit you well and prove her wrong! Us non-size 2’s can rock anything and look amazing!

I have a grandma who says things that will make your jaw drop sometimes also.  I am all for every girl/woman picking out the dress that SHE loves the most and that makes her feel like a princess.  I have to agree with Chrispygal though to a certain extent.  I am a size 10 but I wear a size D bra.  It was EXTREMELY important to me that I NOT be bubbling up out of the top of my dress.  The plain fact is, I need to pay more attention to that than a girl with a smaller chest does. (IF it is my desire to avoid the “bubbling over” look).  I fell in love with my Maggie Sottero strapless gown because it completely covers the cleavage so people can focus on me and the gorgeous dress–NOT the girls popping out of the top, lol.  I also think it is VERY important to sit down and bend over in your dress.  I was at a wedding two weeks ago with a plus size bride who looked GORGEOUS in her gown when she was standing up.  I do have to say that when she would bend over or sit it TOTALLY changed the look of the dress.  OH MY GOODNESS… I was seriously scared at one point when she was bending over to give someone sitting down a hug that she was going to pop out of the top of the dress.  Again, I think it all comes down to good tailoring, a great fit, and paying just a little extra attention to how your dress moves/fits when you bend over or sit.  By the way you girls above look BEAUTIFUL in your dresses!!!!

“You can learn so much from those shows! Did you know, I was watching Say Yes to the Dress the other night, and it turns out that some of the grandmothers-in-law were absolute bitches? Being harpies was so unattractive on them, just letting all of their nastiness hang out!”

@UpstateCait: I do agree with you that sometimes older people say things that are very rude, with and without their knowledge-that does NOT make it right.  However, I think it would be in your best interest to frame it differently and not take it personally.  A lot of older people “tell it like it is” that is what they do.  You are not going to change that.  My recommendation is to learn to laugh at it-it will be better for you in the end.

@UpstateCait: I remember seeing this post a month ago and automatically thinking “why even bother trying strapless dresses if this is what some people thinkof plus size girls in them”.  I was already concerned that I wouldn’t find anything nice for my plus sized frame.  And then I tried on the most beautiful strapless dress and all my fears went away.  Us plus sized girls can sure as hell rock a strapless dress and don’t you DARE let anyone let you think otherwise!

Ladies, first I have to say this has been a very entertaining post to read over my Saturday morning coffee, so thank you! lol

I’ve looked at all of your pictures and each of you look beautiful and amazing in your gowns! I think women come equipped with built in devices that allow us to know when we look good and when we don’t. (Though some women at Walmart challenge my theory!) Anyway, if you feel beautiful and confident, chances are you’re going to look it.

As for me, I’m not just a full-figured vixen, but one who’s 45 and not as firm as I used to be. I will be wearing a bolero, but that’s because I’m going with the smoke and mirrors plan. With a good corset, strapless dress and bolero I can own it! 😉 Besides, the last thing I want to do is give your FGIL any supportive evidence for her rude, thoughtless comment!
