@MarieeToBee:  YES! I did this, and my guests LOVED it. I really wish I were around during the cocktail hour to hear it. Some of my favourites were Firework by Katy Perry and With or Without You by U2. I had a few friends tell me they sat close to the quartet during the cocktail hour and played a game to be the first to name the “contemporary song.” It’s definitely something people will remember fondly.

Personally, I havn’t been to a wedding that had it, but I think it is a really cool thing and as a guest I would enjoy it.

This reminds me of the Wedding Singer when the string quartet plays “Don’t Stop Believing” at the first wedding http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkBTMAQmzY8 🙂

As someone who has played in a quartet for weddings and is all for live music – contemporary music is getting more common, but if you have specific songs in mind, I’d ask around to see if any local quartets can do what you want them to. They may need as much as 6 months to get your repertoire ready if it’s outside their norm. I’d wait and see if this is even possible before worrying about it. They might not be able to tell you if they are available, but they can at least tell you if they’ll do that repertoire.

On the flip side, my guess is a popular DJ will have Vitamin String Quartet available and that may be a good compromise, both so you get your popular DJ and you get your modern quartet.  Just ask about what he has because some of the ‘quartet’ stuff people will play does not sound like it’s a real quartet (synthesizer music instead).

I have thought of this but the bill is scaring me. If money is the issue for you, get the quartet and ditch the DJ (ipod with a designated person in charge of it) or do as the PP suggested and play music from Vitamin String.

If money is not an issue, get the 2… it would be such a beautiful touch.
