Thanks everyone. These comments are great. It’s amazing how across the board everyone feels. I really, really want her to see the actual ring during the proposal. I think it is more romantic than explaining to her it’s just a “fill in” ring until we get back home. I think I need to get over the fear of losing it. I don’t want to propose before the trip because the reason I decided to take the trip was so I could propose in another country on the beach. Oh and by the way I am staying at an all inclusive resort and we have no plans to leave the resort the entire week unless it is to visit a nearby sister property of the place we’re staying.

lasvegasguy12 : Pretty ring! And since you’re staying at a resort you have even less reason to worry. We went to Cancun shortly after getting engaged (my ring was $10K as well) and I never once felt unsafe wearing it around, even when we ventured off the resort for a bit, I just turned the ring around so my the diamond was in my palm when we walked through some questionable areas.

Beautiful ring! Definitely have to propose with it….not a fake! She’s a lucky lady and congrats on your upcoming engagement! lasvegasguy12 :

I personally would be terrified wearing flashy jewellery overseas. Especially in a country with a relatively high crime rate.
I’m guessing you are American… let me assure you that those of us who actually live ‘overseas’ wear jewellery and carry expensive handbags and everything. Relatively high crime rate ? Relative to what ?
OP of course don’t propose with a fake ring , insure the actual ring and propose with it .

elderbee : I’m from Australia where the armed robbery rate is roughly half that of the Dom Rep
But you know. Im only chasing facts, rather than “me and my mates do it fine no problems you’ll be right hey”
But granted, like I said, I’m cautious when travelling. If OP isn’t, then that’s his choice. But he came here asking opinions so I gave it.

I think if you have to have a fake ring it should be an obviously fake ring – almost something silly.
But personally it’s another vote for using the real ring. Once you are engaged she will be wearing it all the time and face the decisions on when to take it off / leave it on. In 10 years time when you go on holiday she’s unlikely to leave the ring at home…. Basically at some point the ring has to come and be seen by the outside world – now seems like the time 🙂
Have a wonderful trip.
