I would go with the first guy.  To be honest, I don’t think the second guy is any more creative than the 1st.  The deal the first guy is giving you is better and you said he has a better personality.

Did he explain why he was late?

Personally, I’d go with john Salgado.  It says a lot that the venue reccomends him and it’s a better value.

You could always take in some pictures you like and tell him these are some of what you’re looking for.

And honestly, I only looked through twenty or so pictures of each but the second one didn’t seem that much more creative.

Edit: and 3 days wait time!? That’s unreal! I’m jealous!

Their photos are very similar. so based on that, I would go with #1. You get more for the $$$. And his personality will help your photos be fantastic. If you get along well with him and he puts you at ease, your photos will reflect that. You want to be comfortable and natural on your wedding day.

Like PPs, I don’t see much of a difference in style between the two. Maybe you just like the actual setup/decor of the other girl’s wedding?

Based on the deal/price and personality of the first guy, I would go with him. Maybe get on Pinterest or somewhere and save various shots/ideas that you can send him ahead of time to make sure he knows what you like

I agree with everyone else in going with the first guy. I actually prefer his photos. Sure, they’re not particularly “creative”, but I find his ability to make the subject stand out even in a cluttered environment to be much more impressive (and, possibly, more important) than the second guy’s tendency to get good shots only when there are no other factors in the scene. I think the first guy’s balance is great.

@Miss Heirloom:  I agree not a particularly good excuse, but I would think someone (you, Fiance, or someone in bridal party) could call the day before the wedding to remind/confirm. (though I agee being late would scare me!)

Ultimately, though you need to go with what you like.  I feel like your wedding should be the one time that you get what you want, esp. with something as big as photography.

I think John Salgado’s pics are a million times better than #2.  They might not be as wacky, but I do think they are creative.  Most importantly, they really get the moment and the people, which is what you will care about much more than innovation when you look at your pics through the years.  I looked at aproximately 1000 photogs, and his album still really stood out.

As for lateness, everyone makes a mistake, especially independant contractors.  Just make sure everything is set up properly for him on your wedding day.  He wouldn’t be preferred by your venue if he was unreliable.

I’d go with the first one. I actually liked his photos better! And it’s usually a safer bet to go with a preferred vendor. Not to mention the price difference. When you think about all the a-la-carte add ons with the second guy, it’s definitely easier on the budget to go with guy #1!

ETA: I should read final posts before I give advice to people who have already made decisions. lol

You’ve already made your decision so I definitely wish you the best of luck.  The only thing I want to add further to this thread are two things future brides hiring a photographer might to consider:

1 – Editing speed is not indicative of higher quality.  It’s understandable that you want your photos back as quick as you can have them.  If a photographer is promising that short of a turn around time than it says to me that the individual attention in the editing process that each photo receives is minimal.

2 – Just because a photographer is on a vendor preferred list doesn’t mean that you are at an advantage for choosing them. All it means is that the photographer has likely provided some sort of sample images or materials to that venue in exchange for being part of their list.  The other thing to consider is shooting at one venue over and over again does not always foster creativity.
