I had no problem with the word fiancé (possibly because as a Canadian, French words seem more common and less fancy?), but I definitely noticed that other people didn’t like it. In one particularly stupid situation, I was mocked for using the word in an Amazon review (“I couldn’t get this printer to work, but my fiancé eventually got it set up after an hour or so”—except the story was longer with more details about the problem.)

i always felt funny saying fiance as well.  it didn’t roll off the tongue naturally to me.  thankfully we had a short engagement and i could call him my husband that much sooner.

i don’t think this is a big deal.

I asked my husband about this after seeing this thread. Apparently he never really used it either (I didn’t even notice). He says fiance is “a stupid word.” LOL! I asked what he called me when we were engaged then? “Duh, your name.” Touche!

I’m confused, is he your FI?  Or is he your BF?

I’m really not getting the “pretentious” thing. How can it be pretentious to call something what it is?

You are his fiancée, not his girlfriend. It would bug me too.

I’m really happy to see that I’m not the only one who felt weird saying fiancé. It never really rolled off the tongue and every time I did I felt like I was daring the person I was speaking with to start asking wedding questions. Super glad we upgraded to husband and wife!

To me this sounds mostly like difficulty with pronunciation. Are people who properly say “nuclear” with the K sound  before the L, “cache” to sound like “cash” not “cachet” or “picture” instead of “pitcher” pretentious? Like any word that is new to you, it can take practice.

carolinabelle :  I agree. I very rarely actually say Fiance in real life. I use it on this board because well it’s super easy to type and this is a wedding forum.

But in real life, I honestly think I’ve said it like 2 times out loud. Ha-ha! I think it sounds super pretentious.

I hate the word fiance as well! I actually try to avoid referring to him by anything other than his name because of that. I only really use it when I introduce him to someone and it’s relevant for them to know our relationship. But I get feeling weird using the term ‘boyfriend’ when it is something more than that, that’s why i’m glad we’re having a short engagement!
