- Wedding: September 2014
I’m in a bit of a pickle. My fella and I just booked the church (Infant Jesus in Port Jefferson) and now we’re narrowing down the venue. We are still early in our planning and ahead of the curve with most of it so the church date is still flexible. I’m having a hard time with the venue though. Here’s the story:
I LOVE the Old Field Club in Old Field. For what I envision, it’s perfect. I loved the space. I did not like the woman we met with (I believe she’s the catering manager – “CM”). We don’t want a large cocktail hour, it’s not the money it’s more the fact that people fill up on cocktail hour and don’t eat dinner. I’ve done it at many weddings and I hate it. We’d like to keep cocktail hour simple and wow ‘em with the entrée. CM kept pushing a huge cocktail hour on us. We do want a great beer selection. We’re both beer snobs and have many friends who are big name brew masters at various breweries on the island. We are planning on having a beer created for the wedding (something totally cheesy like “Matrimony-Ale”) and would like to have our guests enjoy a special, personal touch. CM had no idea if they would allow outside beers and told us “well, most people drink Bud Lite” (Bud Lite is toilet water). We don’t want a buffet wedding. Personally, I’ve always felt it’s a little tacky and I hate hearing a DJ announce “ok, food is ready!” – it’s like a huge cattle call for food. Can you guess it? CM kept pushing a buffet wedding even after we told her we aren’t interested.
When we met with her she couldn’t answer 90% of the questions we had. I understand she might not have the OK to authorize certain things right away BUT I emailed her the morning after our meeting (4/3) thanking her and asking her to please get back to us. No response. I emailed her again today and I’m not counting my chickens. For a Saturday (September 2014) wedding, it’s $140++ (nearly $183 a person) with 100 person minimum – this isn’t exactly “chump change” and seeing as I didn’t get the service I thought we’d get right off the bat, I’m a little hesitant to fork over $20k+.
