When I was dress shopping, I really loved the Allure and Maggie Sottero collections.  There were a lot of dresses that fit my tastes as well as my budget.  Most dresses I tried on were in the $1000-1200 USD range, however the more elaborate dresses cost more.  As for the designers you mentioned, this dress appears to be inspired by Claire Pettibone:

Maggie Sottero Savannah Marie

while this one has more of a Jenny Packham feel:

Maggie Sottero Gemma

The first dress is pretty embellished, and they are both from her new collection, so they might be out of your price range.  I would keep an eye out for sample sales and preowned sites if that is the case.

I’m looking for something in a similar price range for a destination wedding and I’ve found several Nicole Miller dresses I like..

sophielle:  Jcrew. That’s their specialty, their dresses often go on clearance/sale, and their bridal sizes are the same as their dress sizes, so no weird calculating.

I don’t know what your budget is, but if you could go up to about $2-3k these are possibilities:

Tara Keely – this one’s a bit structured – but it has a Claire Pettibone feel to me:

Martina Liana

I will always suggest Maggie Soterro. I did not pick one of her styles for my dress, but did try on a couple sheath styles. If you go to the main Website, you can select “Sheath” under the silhouette.

Sawyer Bridal Gown

It was very light, which I did like about it.

sophielle:  this is my dress – it’s a maggie sottero and was $749. It’s kind of a cross between a sheath/a-line (very slight)

Try a webside like preownedweddingdresses.com (used dresses) or bestbridalprices.com (a real brick and mortar store that also sells authentic dresses online) and search for a sheath silhouette. OP, I’ve seen some really nice used gowns being sold for ridiculous prices, even things like Claire Pettibone inching toward $1000. Even try Ebay. I have bought (and sold) several dresses on there with no problems, and there are some real steals.

Here’s some I found in 15 minutes:

A Jenny Packham for $760

Leanne Marshall (project runway I think?)

Romona Keveza to die for!

And this Enzoani! *swoon*
