I am hoping to find a place in the NJ / PA / NY area for an outdoor wedding on a LOW budget. 🙂
- Ideally this place would have the following perks:
- beautiful scenery, possibly a lake to swim in?
- allow us to do our own BBQing / have a kitchen where we can make our own food
- allow alcohol
- have a pavilion or some sort of covered area in case of rain (a barn would be GREAT!)
It would even more amazing if there were some accomodations there or nearby – camping is fine for a lot of our friends, but family would probably prefer a bed and plumbing. 🙂
We’d love to keep everyone in one place for the ceremony and reception. We are very low-key and trying to keep things as low-cost as possible, so not looking for places that advertise themselves (and hence charge more) as wedding specialists.
Basically we want to have a big picnic with our loved ones, play some games, and maybe be lucky enough to have a campfire and go swimming.
I’ve checked out a few camps and state parks, but most of them don’t allow alcohol, and we’d really love to have some champagne, wine and beer available. I know of someone who got married at an orchard that sounded perfect…except that it’s in New Hampshire!
Any suggestions on a place closer to home that might fit the bill? So tricky finding one!
Thanks in advance!

Hi! I haven’t looked into this at all but when I went to visit the Skylands Castle in Ringwood, they let us drive down to their chapel. The chapel itself is right by Sheperd Lake. It’s very clean and we noticed people picnicking and canoeing. This link provides some info on the Sheperd Lake recreation area. I think I took some pictures of the lake while we were there so if I can find them, I’ll PM you. Good luck!

Have you looked into Rutgers Gardens, in New Brunswick?
It’s a very nice spot for a wedding, actually. There are beautiful gardens with lots of great spots for a ceremony, a covered pavillion with a big fireplace, a giant lawn where you could play croquet, bocce or frisbee golf, a pretty little woods where you could take pictures. There’s nowhere to swim, but the place is bordered by the Raritan river, so there is water around.
I’m not sure about costs or details, but I used to see lots of weddings there when I walked my dog in the little forest. It’s worth looking into.

Love, love, love the Prallsville Mill! The Farm Museum in Queens is pretty awesome too. Unfortunately, I think both of these places require you to use one of their preferred vendors – which pushes them out of our budget. 🙁 Tough finding a place where catering is actually inexpensive (is there such a thing??) or where we can BYO food and booze….
I will definitely look into the castle at Ringwood, though, as well as Rutgers – thanks!

Good luck with your venue search. What you are looking for sounds like what I would like to do for a rehearsal/welcome dinner. I still have not decided on a place.

Hi!! I am getting married at an awesome place called Chanteclaire Farm in Deep Creek Lake, MD…It’s only about 1.5 hours from Pittsuburgh, so while it would be somewhat of a destination wedding, it might not be too bad. Deep Creek Lake in general has all of the things that you are looking for and Chanteclaire Farm is a wedding facility there with a barn! Check it out at http://www.chanteclairefarm.com! Good luck!
