A Serbian Film sounds absolutely disgusting. Definitely will never, ever watch it.

ArshimA really good one I saw recently was “Mama,” which was produced by Guillermo Del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Orphanage”). What made it so creepy was that it involved children.

I definitely second “Insidious.” I can’t wait for the second one – I think it’s being released in August.

I also really liked “The Uninvited” and “The Haunting of Molly Hartley,” which is really, almost painfully slow in the beginning, but it’s great if you stick with it. Another good (sort of indie) horror movie is “The Deaths of Ian Stone.”

@hyperJulie:  Seconded! The Orphanage scared the heck out of me. The Devil’s Backbone is also super creepy.

@soontobebe LOVE Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil.  I’m always trying to convince people to watch that movie.  One of my favorites.

@Arshim:  Wolf Creek is based on a true story, if you want realism! Also, Snowtown – not really horror exactly, it’s also a true story, but VERY creepy.

The Descent scared the absolute shit out of me. I still jump at certain points.

I like Rec. It’s in Spanish, the remake is Quarantine (which is in English), but the original is very good. Also, Insidious was terrifying.

@Isabelle663:  I watched Quarantine, and thought it was decent. I was expecting a really crappy B movie but it ended up scaring me a couple of times.

Public Service Announcement to everyone here: I read the description, and I should’ve known better, but I made the horrible mistake of watching A Serbian Film, mostly out of curiosity with how they filmed certain things I read about without getting arrested (answer – dolls). When the movie ended I felt physically ill and ashamed that I had watched it. Absolutely do not watch this movie. It was truly awful.

Martyrs, 28 Days Later, Evil Dead II, Dawn of the Dead and The Descent…that would be my top 5. Anyway, if you’re looking for horror movie recommendations, I suggest that you have a look at this list of 150 horror movies, they are the basic ones that one horror fans must see:
