I’ve had a 2007 Rav4, a 2011 Ford Edge, and a 2012 Ford Explorer in the last 5 years. I LOVED the Rav4. Loved it. It didn’t get the best gas mileage but it was decent. I was in a pretty bad car accident in 2008 while driving it and walked away without a scratch. To date it is the greatest car I have ever owned.

However, when it came time to trade it in, my husband was very anti foreign cars and thought the Rav4 was too plain anyways, so he highly recommended a Ford Edge and I stupidly went along with it even though I never liked it. A year later we traded it in for the Explorer because we both hated the Edge. It wasn’t a bad car, but my husband wanted all the bells and whistles of the new Explorer and I couldn’t stand looking at the Edge which I thought was ugly. I am still annoyed at being pushed into buying that car.

I like the Explorer, but it’s pretty big and sometimes hard to tell if I’m in parking spots all the way, the gas mileage isn’t that great, and the car payment isn’t that great either. Truth be told, I miss the Rav.

I have a Toyota Highlander. It’s a bit above the price range you want (30k but will likely last forever) but it gets about 23-25mpg, has a third row, and I love it!

I would get a Hyundai Elantra Touring (hatchback version) because it gives you more cargo room than a compact SUV and double the gas mileage. There are way better options for good gas mileage out there that give you as much space or more than an SUV.
