We’re also having out wedding in the Catholic church and are having our Groomsmen and ushers wear a black suit of their choosing.  We figured that many of the guys might already have a suit for work purposes.  And if not, buying a suit is not much more than renting a tux, plus you can keep the suit afterwards.  I don’t think it’s any less formal either.

We are buying suits because we think tuxes look too much like going to the prom.  Our guys will be wearing braces with them, too.

I don’t think you can ask the guys to buy a suit of your choosing. It’s customary for BMs to buy their own dresses, but there isn’t that same expectation on GMs. With the level of formality you seem to be describing I think tuxes would look better, but if you want them to wear black suits I think you need to wear whatever black suit they already own or can rent.

@Lanabug: We are having an full Catholic mass ceremony, too! We decided on suits for the guys. If you have a Men’s Wearhouse near you, they run a buy 1 get one 1/2 off sale. Our Groomsmen suits retailed for $200, and after the sale were $100 each. We also got their shirts and ties at the same sale. GMs outfits were $130 (without shoes) and a tux rental would be $149. My girls are wearing silver, and I’m excited to see it all come together.

I think the plan for our wedding is to go with suits (purchased) as opposed to rented suits with tailcoats etc. This is really down to personal preference, but because the majority of our groomsmen actually dress in suits on a regular basis we know they’ll have a purpose afterwards.

Also, there’s a wealth of choice with wedding suits for men, whereas rental suits for blokes are quite limited in terms of choice. Of course if you want a tux, buying is going to be expensive. Perhaps you can rent a tux..
