There are sone people who are old-fashioned and don’t think women should wear pants.  Since you don’t know who will be interviewing you, I would wear a skirt suit to be safe.  I have always done that for interviews- just make sure you also wear panty hose.  It might depend on the industry too.  I’m in the legal field and there are plenty of partners and judges that prefer/expect skirt suits for ladies.

@nixietink:  What you should wear really depends on the field you’re looking to get into. Certain ones, like law, are EXTREMELY traditional, so you should stick with a black or navy skirt suit with a conservative top and jewelry as well as pantyhose, for sure. In other fields, like computer programming, you can be much more modern.

If you’re more comfortable in pants, I’d go with pants 🙂

@nixietink:  If you’re not certain about the overall feel of the field (conservative/liberal, etc) then you’re probably safer going on the conservative side. Something like a black skirt suit, pink or white blouse underneath (depending on your skin tone, light blue and red can be okay too, but pink is best on me), moderate makeup, sheer pantyhose and modest matching heels (2 inches maybe?) that do NOT show toe. That sort of outfit is generally safe wherever you go, unless it’s an ultra-hip firm or field where “the man” is considered the enemy (there, you probably want to talk to someone in the field/firm to get a feel for what they want, if you have a friend there).

Oh, and make sure the skirt is right at your knee, or maybe an inch higher. I wish I were kidding, but I’ve seen women show up for interviews in skirts barely covering themselves, or in full-on yellow/green/fuschia/whatever color is trendy tights instead of pantyhose. Since I’m in the legal field (HUGELY conservative) you can guess whether they got the job.

@MrsBeck:  I actually love skirts and hate trousers with a passion! lol But I know how to wear skirts, including walking, sitting and getting in and out of cars in them. And stockings are the salt of my fashion life 🙂 But it’s definitely not for everybody, and I see no reason why a woman should be forced to suffer through an interview wearing a skirt she’s not comfortable in when she has enough on her plate already.

If you go the skirt route, either match your skin tone (read:dont wear suntan shade if you are pale/olive) or ultra sheer black. I work in a uniformed private school where hose are required and if they send someone into my classroom to train and their hose/stockings/knee highs/whatever are an “off” color or dont fit properly (read: baggy on their ankles or aren’t stretched tight) it bugs me all day. Call me a hose snob but it seriously makes me crazy and I feel it looks as if they just thoughtlessly grabbed a pair.

End of rant! Lol personally, id go with the skirt suit.
