My Fiance and his brothers (who are going to be his two groomsmen), are rather slender indviduals. To give you all some idea of what I mean by “really slender”, his oldest brother is a little under 6 feet tall, has a 29 inch waist, and a 33 1/2 inch inseam. His younger brother is 6 feet tall, and has a 26 inch waist (I don’t even…) and a 34 inch inseam. My Fiance is the shortest, and he wears a 36R when I buy him jackets and is about a 29×32 in dress pants.
We’d already fully planned on buying them suits or tuxes instead of renting them, since we’re aware there are a lot of alterations that are going to need to be made, but the issue I’m running into is finding basic suits that can even be altered to fit their measurements. I worked for a retail company that sold quite a bit of menswear for about 6 years, but we didn’t do any tailoring and we only carried our line, no one else’s, so I’m pretty ill-equipped for looking at suiting that is not from the store I worked at.
Each of them already has a black suit that has been tailored to them, but we aren’t 100% sure we want to go with black, and my Fiance seems to be wanting to lean more towards them having suits that are special. Unfortunately, the place where they purchased and tailored these suits has closed down in recent years. (I’m also not 100% sure the oldest brother still fits into his – he’s gained a lot of muscle mass in his shoulders and arms the last year or so)
To make things a little more difficult, this is not as simple as just dragging them to a store and having them try things on. My Fiance and his family live in Alberta, Canada, and I live in Colorado, which is where the wedding will be.
So, I’m looking for a lot of things here, I guess I’ll itemize…
- Suggestions on brands that make suits slimmer but just as tall as others.
- Feedback on people that have had custom suits made (and possibly prices? Is there even a vague chance that someone has had custom suits made in the Edmonton, AB area? Is that too much to hope for?)
- Any other input is welcome, even if it’s just, “Girl, have them wear the suits they already have.”
Thanks in advance. 🙂

There are quite a few old threads discussing http://www.studiosuits.com
where they could have custom suits made.
Other Bees have posted about http://www.indochino.com
Reading the old threads should give you some idea if you would be comfortable using either of these.
Have you checked Yelp for reviews of tailors in Edmonton?
Suits or suit separates that you buy retail are gong to require alterations They should buy a jacket that fits and will most likely have to have the pants taken is as a standard inseam for a 28″ waist (forget about a 26) is 30 or 32″. They are going to have to buy larger waists to get the length they need, then get the waist altered.

If you have a burrlington coat factory near you, they carry suits for skinny tall guys. All our guys were skinny, including DH, with 28 and 29 waists with 34 and 36 inseam. No problem finding them there, which was shocking to us. All of them can rarely find jeans, so we thought it was going to be a hopeless cause, but burrlington had many to choose from. We ended up with 3 Calvin Klein suits with minimal tailoring needed.

Burlington Coat Factory does not have stores in Canada for the men to be able to try on suits.

There are “slim fit” suits. Fiance is 6’4″ and weighs about 170 lbs so I know what you mean by tall and skinny. The slim fit suits usually fit him very well.

Do you have an Express in your area? They have suits that go down to a 36 jacket and pants down to a 28 waist (32 length). Their suits are slim fit and very flattering. http://www.express.com/clothing/men/suits/cat/cat1620002 If you shop the right sales/coupons you can get a suit for ~$220usd

Try Hugo Boss Red line brand. They are perfect for skinny men and my husband wore their tux on our day, but it’s very expensive.

Our guys wore Perry Ellis suits, which are available directly from his website. They were pretty inexpensive, too. I think the pants were about $70 and the jackets were $140ish, but we also got them on sale. (Didn’t do the vests).
Both DH’s groomsmen are well over 6ft, gangly guys
ETA: they carry these at Dillard’s, don’t know if that exists near you

Check out Topman (Topshop’s male line), H&M and Express. They all have a more slim fit vs. boxy/wide. My husband is 6’1″, pretty lean, and got his suit from Express. No alterations needed! He’s also gotten some really decent suits from H&M.

My fiance is skinny, he recently purchased the Ludlow suit from J Crew. He did a LOT of shopping around (I’ll be honest that I was not involved at all) but I’ve seen it on him and it looks great! 😉

My son has very similar measurements. Men’s Warehouse had a very nice Marc Ecko suit that they were able to alter for him perfectly. They thought it would require recutting the pants, but their tailor ended up being able to take them in without recutting, saving us $60! They were having a sale (because they’re always having a sale) and with alterations, the suit ended up costing around $350. It looked GREAT!
ETA: Actually, that $350 included 2 shirts and a tie. I’m sorry I don’t remember how much it was just for suit and alterartions. Probably around $270ish.

My husband wore his slim-fit suit from H&M. It looked very nice and was a great deal.

Express is actually where I used to work! They do have one in Edmonton so that is definitely a possibility (as FI’s will require zero alteration if it’s from there), but I don’t know how they look after a tailor has gotten their hands on them. Just based on the fact that I know it well though, maybe I should stick with that…
Thank you very much for the links! I’ll definitely check them out.
We might end up doing Hugo Boss for Fiance and something else for his brothers, depending on cost. I know those would look great on him…
As someone mentioned, they unfortunately don’t have Burlingtons anywhere near where the boys could try them on. 🙁

Thanks for the suggestions! I hadn’t thought of J Crew or H&M!
Men’s Wearhouse doesn’t exist in Canada (I believe) but I know they have a store owned by the same people. I’ll do a little more research.

hope you find something good! my fiance is going with Express. they have suits 30% off right now plus there’s a $75 off $200 code that works on top of that… the one he’s looking at works out to be $125 or $175 if he decides to get the vest too. Great deal! (Not sure how if the same sale is in CA right now though?)

Call some places and see if they carry European cut suits. They are more slender, less boxy compared to regular suits. You will still have to have them tailored, but the cut will be more flattering.
