I’m sure many of you heard about the controversy followed by last nights super bowl halftime performance where Adam Levine (sp?) being shirtless was celebrated but Janet Jackson has an accidental nip slip and puritanical hysteria breaks loose because you know women’s nipples are inherently sexual and men’s aren’t. What are your thoughts? Just by the sarcastic undertones in this post you can probably tell my position that i think it’s sexist and it just is another representation of how we as Americans tend to oversexualize women’s bodies in ways we don’t with men’s. Let me know your thoughts ladies.

First off idk who was celebrating Adam Levin being shirtless because he was kind of painfully awkward to watch.
Anyway, I’m all for free the nip, but I’m not sure that it’s an entirely fair comparison. Janet’s halftime show was 15 years ago, and attitudes have definitely changed in that time towards wardrobe malfunctions. Yeah a lot of people still call out celebrity nip slips like “oh my god how DARE” but there is a LOT more people than before being like “why am I supposed to care about a nipple” in response.
I would be very interested to see the 2019 response to a female nip slip at the superbowl.

There is already a super bowl thread in the lounge of the bee. Might want to re categorize your thread though as you have it listed under engagement.

soexcited123 : lol I wouldn’t sexualize Adam Levine’s body either XD
I think maybe because the Janet Jackson thing was supposedly accidental and Adam Levine meant to be shirtless? Also, a lot has changed in those fifteen years.

chelbell23 : celebrate was a poor choice of words I meant that people were ok with him being shirtless because there wasn’t a deal made about it like when Janet Jackson had her one second nip slip but that is a good point other posters brought up which is that 15 years again when the Janet Jackson nip slipped happen attitudes towards that type of thing was different.

soexcited123 : I know what you meant, I was just joking lol. And that was me who introduced that point that attitudes were different 15 years ago.

chelbell23 : I echoed your same points without reading your comments. I remembered the Janet Jackson thing was 8 years ago because I was 9 years old and my parents freaked out before I realized what happened 😛

That was the worst half time show I’ve ever seen. I was just hoping that Cardi B was gonna pop out at some point. Adam Levine….just …. no… I saw a meme on instagram where someone was like “Watching Adam Levine dancing next to Travis Scott… NOTICIABLY WHITE” LOL with the crest toothpaste. I couldn’t stop cracking up. OH and the curtain and pillow pictures…
My bf’s sister thought Big Boi’s coat was a golden retriever at first LOL!!

soexcited123 : it’s a nipple. People need to chill out. I see a lot of mom boards with people complaining about public breastfeeding and I just can’t. If you have a problem with functioning female nipples, but not male nipples, then something is seriously backwards in your brain. Love them all or hate them all, but just treat them the same.

ispeakingifs : Not sure how “15 years ago” came out to “8 years ago” but that’s cool too.

LilliV : Spoiler alert, boobies are for babies!
I never realized how off America’s view of breastfeeding has been for a long time until recently. But it is weird that people tend to sexualize a woman’s breast but not a man’s. Also, I’ve noticed men’s but cheeks are sometimes shown in movies as comedic relief but when it’s a woman’s butt it’s sexual.

Is it really a controversy? How is it news that people hold double standards? You seen your president?
Anyway. Boy looked a mess. His tattoos suck.
